What series and in what grade would you collect if you had $1,000 and had to complete it?

I recently completed a raw 64 coin set of Buffalo Nickels in VG-F for about $650 and had a blast doing it. To me, it was more fun and more rewarding than the MS slab set which I started way before, and currently have only about 1/3 complete.

If you had $1,000 to collect a complete set (no errors or varieties) which series and in which grade would you go for?

Answers taken very seriously, as I'm looking for my next "raw" set to go after! image

    Dan,

Close to $1000 is a nice AU Peace dollar collection. Picking sliders would make it very attractive, and they are relatively cheap right now. If your leaning is to moderns, 65 Ikes would be do-able.

You could do a nice set of Two Cent pieces in AU, but for the 1872 which would probably have to be EF.

  • Thanks Don & Russ. I really like both of those choices, especially because of the "AU" grade, which I think is a little under-rated.

Russ, I know you have started to get into 2 cent pieces lately, have you come close to completing a set, or are you still early in the hunt?

Don, I'd also like to hear more about Peace Dollars. Maybe I'll do some reading on them, then PM you some questions! image

Raw Uncirculated Franklin Halves. You could put a beautiful raw set or two together for that type of money.

  • A Franklin half MS or Proof ( Non-FBL/ Non-Cam ) in 62 or 63 I would think would look nice.

    Dan,

My raw set is done except for the 1872. Have those in EF, but I need to replace my 1870 because it's corroded.

My graded set, I have five so far; 1864, 1865, 1867, 1868, 1871. Four to go.

Oh yeah, you could also do a pretty decent Walker Short set in AU to BU. Beautiful coins that in the lower grades can still be found at very reasonable prices.

  • Fccloud & Ccr,

I don't think I want to go after Franklins. I've seen what Lucy has done to other Frankie collectors! image

Proof Lincoln cents, best bargain in numismatics right now!

Here are some I'd do (and actually am image ):

Silver roosies (or with clad) in MS (and you'd still have plenty left over).
Jefferson nickels in MS without full steps
    Anything clad
Lincolns (59-date or all of them if you exclude the super-expensive ones) in G+ (or MS if 59-date)

I hope she doesn`t read this thread. Else I`ll be in the doghouse.image

For an extended Nickel set you can collect a AU/BU 1938 - 1964 Jeff set and a low end proof together. Both a low end proof/cirulation set looks like it can be done together for under $1000.

I would do Lincoln Wheat cents in VF for just about $1,000. However, for a little more I would go after Indian Head cents in VG. I am talking about glossy, hard surfaces with no verdigris, no bad dings, no rim cuts, no spots, even color and even wear. Just think how challenging that would be!

    Dan,

You could pick Franklins up at shows or from local dealers and stay away from on line auctions image

PCGS MS66 Roosevelt Dimes - all 48 coins are available for about $900...in fact, there's a set for sale on ebay right now w/o reserve for $900! Then you'd still have $100 left over for something else........your choice!

  • the 2 cent series is a great series -- first one I completed. Mostly VF or XF for me, though I have an 1866 Fine and 1869 VG I'm looking to upgrade. The coins may be cheap, but they're tough to come by, especially the 1864 small date and 1872.

With this kind of money you could have a complete choice circulating modern set.
That is every circulating issue since 1964 in nice choice condition. It would require
a great deal of effort but no more than $1000. If you purchased the coins raw with
an eye toward quality there would also be lots of gems in your sets.

  • I agree, I'd go for the set of buffalos also, no coin looks better in the lower grades then buffs, and you could complete you set with a nicely toned MS-66 38-d.

WITH 1000.00 YOU COULD ASSEMBLE A NICE LOWER CIRCULATED SET OF INDIAN CENTS, BUFFFALO NICKELS, AND LIBERTY NICKELS .

AND ACTUALLY HAVE A NICE SET, BUT I BELIEVE IT SOUNDS EASIER THAN ACOMPLISHING. SOME OF THOSE DATES WOULD BE HARD TO LOCATE IN PROBLEM FREE LOWER CIRC GRADES
  • I'd finish my Liberty nickels...
