What is the best way .....

to store your graded cards. I have about 200 now. With me working on a '69T set that will be 700 graded cards.

How does everyone else do it?

Thanks!

  • I just keep them strewn about in a hallway. I can't even remember what's in the rooms at the end: image

Seriously, I'm building storage units for my cards right now. When I'm finished, I'll post some pics here.

  • I use the handy dandy little black boxes that PSA used to sell.
Not sure if they still do.
I never tried the hallway method. THEY'RE ALL GONNA GET SCRATCHED!!

  • Just buy what's referred to in the hobby as a "shoe box." They cost about $2.50 retail. It's looks like a box shoes come in, but there is a divider down the middle. I can fit 75 PSA graded cards into each side, 150 per box. Four boxes hold a 600-card set PERFECTLY. The cards stick up above the rim just so you can see the label on the front card. There is a lid that fits snugly over the cards, but not all the way down onto the box itself.

Then stack the boxes in your empty gun safe. Buy one at Academy or a gun store. (Why would anyone put guns in a safe anyway? Do the burglars give you any warning?)
  • now that is a beautiful site!! cards piled high!

  • I've built three boxes with the help from my Dad who is an excellent carpenter. I'm not spamming but i was going to work on a few more and try to sell them on Ebay. But wasn't sure if i could make my money back on them. So i kept the ones i've built for now.

  • Spacktrack,

I just happened to be moving a lot of cards tonight and I accidentally dumped a box of about 500 slabbed cards. I just left them there because I didn't feel like dealing with it at the time. Then I read this post and thought I'd take a picture. I really am much more organized. Just thought that would be humorous.

P.S. The cards have since been neatly stacked and organized. Unfortunately, I saw about 10 or so slabs that had cracked in the accident. I guess I'll need to get them reholdered. What does that cost? I think I remember $5 each.

  • Jeb - you cannot be a married man with pile in the hall like that! MY wife threatens me every Monday night to clean up because the housekeeper will be here on Tuesday! She would stack my stuff on the front porch and change the locks if I pulled one like you got going there! Hope you don't live in a flood zone. Rick

JEB - great pic ! image

HECK55 - We had a housekeeper once a week when my wife and I both worked.
We had to spend a few hours cleaning the house each time before she got there.
Never could figure that out ...

As to storing cards, the boxes that PSA sends your cards back to you in work great for me.
Each one holds 24 cards securely, and you can then store all the little boxes in larger boxes.

.............so what's the record for stacking PSA slabs on top of each other without them falling down?

Surely someone here has at least tried! I wonder if you can stack 600+ straight up.

PS. Boy, I've got too much time on my hands..................

These guys offer a "Vault Box" specifically designed for graded cards and holds 30-35. They offer a Super Vault box that is tall enough to cover the entire slab and holds 75-80. I didn't think that was worth the extra $1.25 (and all the graded cards I have would fit in 1 super vault box image), so I bought a few regular Vault Boxes. They work great. I tried the shoe box method but I couldn't get the slabs side by side as the box was a little too small.

JEB - Your hallway looks like my office! My wife is always yelling at me to clean the clutter up. My standard response is, "if you don't want to see the mess, close the door" As I have no problem, I know where everythings at...jay

I checked out BCW. I think there is some False Advertising going on.

    Vault Box: 15 3/4 x 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 Holds 30-35 Cards
    Super Vault Box: 15 3/4 x 3 1/2 x 6 Holds 75-80 Cards

The only difference in the boxes is the height (1 1/2 Inches). How can one box hold more than twice the other?

I wasn't the greatest math person in school, but I don't think this adds up.
  • Update:

Cards are now back in order. Hallway has been cleared:

    BOTR,

You do have too much time on your hands, but, I guess I do too: 100 stacked slabs are about 18" tall. Unless you have really high ceilings (or keep your cards outdoors - not recommended), 600 slabs would stack up to an astounding 9 feet. I have found that stacks of less than 100 start to lean. Without external support, a feat of this magnitude would be amazing. I'll post photos of my attempts later. image

  • LIZARD put a bed in the picture add about 50 small cardboard boxes add 20 yards of bubble wrap with 2 inches of popcorn and your in my bedroom , almost forgot the 34 boxes of AVON crap and thats my masterbedroomimageimage

  • tbub,

I haven't collected the "Avon Crap". Does PSA grade that also? image

You asked for it, so here is what's behind door #1:

    image

There is a bed in the picture (it would take a while to make it usable with all of the cards on it), there are probably 20 or 30 small cardboard boxes in the room, but I didn't see any bubble wrap. I'll have to work on that. image

  • Lizard Man - is that a Super Nintendo on the bottom shelf. Those are becoming collectors items themselves. With a couple of games I've been getting $50 or so on Ebay. Could be good for a couple of more cards. Does PSA grade old video games???

Now there is a man that knows how to set a mood. Trading Cards on the bed and Two (2) Lava Lamps! I bet the ladies swoon at the sight. That bedroom must be able to tell stories.

  • Zeppo,

Yes, that is a Super Nintendo. I don't think it's been used since about 1996. But I've got one even better than that, behind door #2:

    image

Yep, that's an Atari 2600 in the original box. That's also a life sized Mark McGwire in the background.

    RobBob,

Actually there are 3 lava lamps! 2 of them are originals from the early 1970s (not the blue one). I rescued them from my grandfather's house when it was destroyed by fire in 1994 - they belonged to my uncle who died in 1975 - he had a nice collection of cards from what I've been told, but unfortunately, they were destroyed in the fire.

    Sportscard Man,

Its only fair to get back to your question too!!!

If you work in an office or wife does - snag empty Copy Paper boxes with the lids. If you cut them down to the height of a graded card, you can use the excess cardboard to divide the interior into three rows. Each row holds roughly 80 cards and the box is plenty sturdy.

The price is right and they stack up nicely!!!
