Why are the 1964 SMS coins not included in the Reg Sets?

I thought PCGS's new variety policy was to add any coin with a population of 5 or more to the "with variety set" Why then was the 64 SMS Jeff not included in the Jeff set? I assume this means that the other sets wont have it either... bummer.

According to BJ, David Hall has at first decided to keep the 1964SMS out of the variety sets. I think if enough collectors express their views it could change it could be added when new varieties are added later this year.

By the way I have a personal interest in this decision since I have a 1964 SMS MS68FS Jefferson

I had a chance to buy one of those for $1650 6-7 years back but passed. It was a NGC67 but only 5.50 steps. Very nice coin though. What grade is yours rwhite?

  • I have a Quarter in 66... probably should send it in for an upgrade, though... it is in its 5 yr old holder from way back. image Looks like it belongs in a 67 holder.

Stacks is a possibility as I believe they were the source for many of the 64 sms coins.

Ryan: I believe it was estimated that 10-12 1964 SMS Wash Quarters exist, yet last I looked, I believe PCGS has already graded 22 coins! IMHO, much of that related to probably trying to get the best coin to upgrade to the MS68 holder, which finally happened for the lucky owner.

It is also possible a few coins got labeled SMS by accident - I once submitted a bulk lot of 1964 Wash Quarters and got back a handful of SMS coins in grades MS65 and MS66 (that was a nice $30k-$50k "hit" that never materialized image ). I gave them back to Rick M. 5 minutes after receiving them (and he made himself available real fast to see me when I mentioned that I wanted to return a handful of SMS coins)!! Since PCGS is very careful to make sure 1965-67 dated coins do not get labeled anything other than SMS (which most of the higher grade coins are), it is possible a coin from 1964 could slip through as a mechanical error. As I recall, Rick M. once told me there are no true diagnostics to identify the SMS quarters, so one really has to be well versed in what these coins look like to avoid a costly problem.

If anyone has an 1964 SMS coin they are concerned about, just PM me. image Wondercoin
