Congratulations to John Constantino for completing the 1969 Topps Baseball Basic Set!

Great job! That is truly an accomplishment! Some of those cards seem impossible to find in high grade! Congratulations!

Thanks for the kudos. It's been a long road, or I should say obsession, that started in the early 80s. Thanks to Gaspipe (Bob C.) for providing several low pops such as the Mike Andrews 9 and the Tresh 8 as well as many others. Also Steve Pekovich provided several upgrades and Ron Sanders Jr completed some helpful trades. I particularly enjoy conversing about the unique aspects of this set with the other 1969 collectors on this forum. It's been great fun! As for what's next, I plan to periodically add more scans to the set and to continue upgrading the 1969 set to replace all the 7s with 8s or 9s and hopefully continue submitting raw cards in the hopes of adding a few more 9s. I also plan to start focusing more on grading out my 1968 set and maybe picking up a high grade 1967 set this year. I will also continue to submit duplicates from my 1970-76 sets to grade them out.
  • Congratulations! Great set. I was hoping to be the first to 100% but I'm currently down at #40 - I think I might pass Ron Sanders' 7th best set soon. image

I agree - there needs to be more discussion here about this set. It is one of my favorite sets. I just happened to concentrate my attention on my 1970 set first because I had about 10000 raw cards from the '70 set vs. only about 3000 from the '69 set when I started submitting them to PSA. I collected both sets raw at the same time and seemed to find better deals on the '70s than the '69s. It seems to be the other way around now for PSA cards - I seem to find better deals on the '69s in PSA 8 and 9 than the '70s (in general - not considering some of the very low pop '69s).

I'd like to see more discussion about this set. I don't have a lot to contribute yet because I'm relatively new to it in graded form.

  • Great Job JOhn... A very nice set indeed!
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... it's about learning to dance in the rain.
  • I just moved into 18th place this past week. I purchsed all of the cards but 5 since December 2002. I joined this board about 3 weeks ago and come to find out, I purchased most of my cards from other posters on this board. Small World!

I like the '69 set in that there are a lot of cards and a lot of variations. Keeps you busy. I will have to slow down for a little while. Spent all of my "allowance". I will have about 10-15 duplicates up for sale on Ebay in about a month or so. No stars, just commons.

Welcome aboard SportsCardMan and welcome to the 1969T club. You'll find this group has a vast knowledge of this set and will likely be able to answer any question you have about the particulars of building the set. Enjoy the hunt!
  • Congrats John

Your three 8's are coming to me from Jersey city. I will forward them to you in about a week or so. Thats three more upgrades for you with not too many more to go. I am right behind you but have found the going slow. I have 2% more in route to put me at 87% but the rest is going to be a bear. This set in 100% is quite an acomplishment and you should be up on the table doing the rummy dance. Great job and good luck upgrading and I will keep an eye out for you.

  • John - An overwhelming accomplishment! The fellowship of 69' collectors has truly been an inspiration over the last few years to me. I can remember when there were only a couple of dozen sets on the registry when it first started and I used this tool to catalog my 69' PSA acquisitions. You were there also.
You made some unbelievable strides last year with astoundingly tough cards in high grade! Very impressive! I thank you also for your informative chat here about our beloved 69' set. .It is nice to see when 69's are discussed that the core group shows up for responses, praise, encouragement and atta boys'.
For those joining the group like JEB and sportscardman this is definitely the place to chat 69's. Good luck on a very rewarding endeavor.
As you know the last 20% of this set can be a slow go. I hope to continue to chip away at this myself as I have been doing since the registries inception and continue to upgrade this set as I have done since breaking open my first packs in 1969.
    Again; Great job!
    Warm Regards

Dave - Thanks. I look forward to receiving them. I'll be making a trip to the post office sometime this week to drop your cards in the mail as well. Thanks for the trade.

Thanks for the compliment Ray. You and Dave are making good progress on your sets and will be 100% before you know it. It looks like some of the tough cards are getting enough publicity now that people who normally don't grade out commons are digging them out of their collections. That will eventually result in them being more readily available. I spoke to Kyle from Kyle's cards and he told me he broke some of the low pop commons out of his personal set and submitted them with most getting 8's. They should be hitting eBay very soon. I was fortunate in that I purchased some of the low pop cards in raw form several years ago prior to the grading craze. I submitted the Mike Ferraro 7, Bill Robinson 8, Lindy McDaniel 8, NL ERA leaders 8, Kekich 8, Cleon Jones 8 and Phil Gagliano 8 among others from my raw set. That kept me from having to chase them when they were pop 1 or 2.

Just heard the news! Congratulations on a challenging set. You indeed have one of the best 1969 sets in the world. I look forward to the scans.

Thanks Ron. You're set probably has more 9s and 10s than any other 1969 set on the registry. When you get yours completed, it's going to be tough to match your GPA. Good luck with your quest.
  • Great Job on the 1969 set John.
