Proof Grading

Grading proof coins for me is difficult because they all look great, however as time has gone on I have begun to notice differences.

Does slight haze around the surface edge of a proof coin affect the grade?
How about a coin with no hair lines but two light very small contact marks?

Thanks

The slight haze that is sometimes seen around the edges of poof coins is a slight negative for eye appeal. I believe a few minor hairlines are much more acceptable than actual contact marks. Of course, everything depends on size and severity.

Actually, the grading services perform a collateral educational service for all collectors. All you need to do to get a real good picture of what grading standards are is to go to a coin show and look at a whole bunch of certified coins. Check out a few hundred PCGS graded proofs and you'll get a good idea of what PCGS looks for in each grade level.
