cracked kellogg's cards

is anyone else having this problem? i received my grades today and i had one that graded a 6 the rest were 8's and 9's. i called after it was posted and psa explained it is cracked. my last submission i had 2 that were graded 9 and cracked after i sold them. one i caught before it was shipped and the other was cracked when the customer received it. i refunded both with no problem but one was football and one was baseball. any help ?

thanks......fab4..............

  • Fab4, I'm not sure what to tell you since I haven't had this problem. I'm assuming you're wraping the cards in layers of bubble wrap or similar. It's possible that the PSA 6 had a small dull corner crack which sometimes you can miss even under magnification. Sometimes it just "blends in", and it can be missed.

Let us know if it was that type of crack or just a huge long crack across the card when you receive your submission back. I can't explain the other two examples. Perhaps it was PSA's fault when the card was slabbed. These can be very fragile cards as I'm sure you know.
  • FAb4 ,

I have 2 1974 PSA 9 cards in slabs that have cracks in them a Johnny Bench and a Rick Monday. Both cards arrived durring a recent cold spell ( I won them on auctions off of EBAY). I plan on taking them to the Fort at the end of MArch and see what PSA says about it... (Also have a few cards that I bought that I think are overgraded) It will be interesting see what they say.

    fab4.....

I'm not saying that I submit more Kellogg's cards than anyone in the world...But I do submit more than most...

With that said, I seem to get cracked cards back from PSA on 2 seperate instances....

    1) When the weather is really cold. I'm not talking about "rainy cold". I mean chill through your bones cold!. I think when I send the package to PSA (always USPS PRIORITY MAIL), the post office sticks it in the belly of an airplane and the poor little darlings freeze their 3-D's off. It happened this last December.

    2) 1977 Kellogg's seem to experience more cracking than the other years. I don't know why, but when I put an "orphan" package on eBay (all the low grades and cards with qualifiers) there is quite a few 77's.

I believe that I received back from PSA, about 100 cards that were low grades because of visible cracking. Some of the cracks were the type that GEMMINTMAN described, and some of them were big 'ole honker cracks that went from end to end. None of which I would intentionally submit.

I haven't ever had any Kellogg's card crack AFTER it was encapsulated though.

I'm at a point now, where I think this is not a super rare occurance, but rather the nature of the card I collect. I will submit many more Kellogg's cards, and I know that a few will just not "make the cut" and be pushed aside as a cost of doing business.

I think a few other board members have some real doozie pics of Kellogg's cards that are cracked AND PSA 9!

  • I am with Larry on this one. Its the cold weather thats cracking them before and after. I sent 350 Kellogg's in about a month ago. I got back cards (about 10) between 3-6 on the grades that had big honking cracks. I sent enough cards in that I dont miss these. I will only send Kellogg's in late spring, summer and early fall.

Robert nice Palmer there is enough crack there for an arrest.

thanks for the answers. i guess i was lucky it was only a homer jones card. it could have been the o.j. simpson or the carlos may 9 that cracked. i thought maybe the card had a curl in it and that was the problem, but the football came from an unopened set and the baseball from unopened packages. the first 2 cracked after being slabbed as i checked them when i receive them, i use the same lighting that i do when i get ready to submit. i guess it is just the nature of the beast. out of a 32 card submission i ended up with 25-9's and 6-8's and the lonely 6. i guess i should be happy but the 6 bothers me.

  • I've had over 1.000 Kellogg's cards graded and can vouch for the information above. I've never had a card crack after it has been encapsulated. However, I've received a handful of PSA-2's, 3's & 4's. So, they can crack in transit but, from my experience, it's less than one percent.
My thoughts are that if the card has survived 30 years and isn't showing any cracking, then it's probably going to last a long time.
All the advice given above about keeping them out of extremely cold or hot weather is a good idea.

  • Since PSA does not accept UPS Ground shipments (the only way to assure relatively warm temps during the entire trip), maybe you guys could ship FED EX overnight with some sort of heater in it - only has to last 24 hours max. Maybe there is some relatively cheap battery powered heating element that could be inserted into the package with the cards. Or you could just ship them in warm beach sand like this: image

  • Great idea Virtualizard!! image Can you send some of that warm sand up here?? I can send some snow in return. image
