Is proper dipping/acetone considered doctoring?

David,

Thanks for doing another Tuesday Q&A.

With all the messages about At on the coin board, does PCGS consider dipping/acetoning a conservation practice or doctoring a coin? It seem the competition is conserving and my guess would be some of this is cleaning a coin with safe methods. What is PCGS's take doctoring or conservation?

Light dipping of silver coins...with either Jewel-Luster or acetone is a long tradition in the coin market. iI does not adversely effect the surfaces of a coin.

Over-dipping is a negative to eye appeal and could be a grade reduction. I once told a person who was complaining about the grade of a coin the he should "dip it one more time to make it an even dozen."

Harse cleaning, i.e. evidence of cleaning lines...is considered a big negative and will results in a body bag, or if it's not really that bad a substantial reduction in the net grade.
