2002 10th oz. Platinum. The price seem to continue upward!

I was just looking at these things on ebay. Are they an instant rarity? last week I saw some go as low as $140. Now it looks like they will all hit $180 and beyond. 2002

    I don't get this.

While the mintage for the series isn't all that high (18,000), they are being submitted to the services by the carload. And while it's the lowest year mintage-wise for the $10, there are already 1604/3 for MS69/70 at PCGS and 1854/1006 for MS69/70 at NGC. Compare this with the 1998 $10 pop of only 56/1 and 126/0, PCGS and NGC respectively!!

Clearly, 2002 is a much better struck year, and the coin is actually quite plentiful for high grades. 1998 is the rariety. I think those 2002 prices will fall.

Any Idea of what raw coins are going for? Could the be the key to the series at a mintage of 18,000 and that is why the price is going crazy?

  • I only collect the Proofs...Since I have been updating my $2 1/2 set lately, I haven't been following their prices. Has there been similiar movement in the Proofs?

Also, as a side, Has anyone visited the Price Guide at PCGS site and studied the prices for the 2001 $25 proof Platinum? Is this an error?

Dan--That's gotta be an error! There haven't even been any PR70s graded!

    BB--

You're right, Gotta be so. It isn't like they're going into coke machines. For the 1998, though, it DOES appear harder to get a 69 than for most of the other years.
  • This is an interesting thread...Back in November, I bought my wife a MS 1/10th oz. 2002 that she wanted to make into a necklace. One day she was looking at prices in NN or CW and noticed that her coin was worth nearly twice what we paid...now it looks like I will have to buy her a platinum $10 of another, cheaper year. lolimage

I bought a group of 02's at $115/per less than 60 days ago. I think this is a bubble alot like the Ohio-P which has 'settled' quickly. Look at the bidding patterns in all of those auctions? Buy the 03's now at $86/per because probably fewer will be made this year.IMHO

I picked mine up in December for a whole $69.00 plus $10 to make it an MS69. So, I thing I got a bargin. I think they are too high even at the low mintage.

  • This is the clearest case of artificial hype. 18,000 is a bunch of coins for the limited amount of collectors collecting these. I'll admit that I profitted from these people. I bought 32 of them at $85. Sold all around $115-$148. Could have made more I guess, but I expected the bubble to burst long ago. These people will be sorry when the market falls.

I think, I only paid between $55 - $65 for the ones I got already in the slab. That was about a year ago, when nobody wanted them. Now that Platinum is up about $200 /oz maybe it is time to sell. I don't want a repeat of the Millenium Sets.

I only have one and I bought it for my modern set, and I don't plan on selling it, if I did I would have to replace it with something else. What the heck, I have a low mintage coin. Lets face it most of these coins not going anywhere pricewise--it is just another fun set to collect.

  • I've been collecting the $10 plats in PCGS PR69DCAM and have them all up to the 2002. I've been watching the 2002s trade on ebay for over $250. What gives? I paid anywhere from $85 to $115 for the others. Platinum has gone up, but paying over $250 seems crazy.
