Still no MS67 '55-D Washington. Morris, what happend?

Lookin' at the latest pops., I noticed that another MS66 was made, bringing the total to 76 now. I remember Morris (mnmcoin) thinkin' he had an MS67 in the makin' and expected the results shortly.

Morris:
Is this new MS66 the coin that you were refering to? If it is, I share your disappointment.
Heck, I would have been happy with a 66 considering all the '4s & '5s I've gotten back! image

Will the "Holy Grail" ever be found?!? image

Still a 66 available here. imageimage

I think I remember reading in one of the threads that Morris received an MS66 on his coin. Don't know for certain, however.

  • Thanks, Tom. I missed that thread.
I couldn't even find the thread where he mentioned it! image

Seems the MS66s are being realized for what they are. I just checked my listing and almost fell off the chair! image

  • Why is this date so hard to find in MS66+? Do they come with bad strikes, bad luster, numerous marks, etc.? Also, the MS66s that have been made, have they come out of original rolls or mint sets?

    Thanks. -Brianimage

I just submitted a 55-D from an origional mint set. Typical mint set toning but not a tick on it. Maybe it will make a 67.

All of these are reasons that 55D's are tough in high grade.

Additionally, there were only 3.18M made and many were detroyed in the silver melts. So there just arent that many out there to begin with. It is the seventh lowest minted quarter in the series. Only 32D, 32S, 37S, 38S, 39S, and 40D have lower mintages.

It is a semi-key date!! The first MS67 will command thousands!!
HAVE A GREAT DAY! THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!!
  • How does PCGS grade the series in terms of marks, strike, and luster? I don't have any business strike coins graded by PCGS yet, but I want to start getting in to them. Any help on grading them will be greatly appreciated!

  • LW,
As WWQ already stated, those are all reasons that the '55-D is so tough in high grades. However, I believe it had more to do with quality control at the Denver mint than the low mintage figure. I would think that with such a low mintage that they would have been saved by the rolls. That's not to say that many of these rolls weren't melted during the run-up of silver in '79-'80, but even the mint set examples lack the quality. If you look at the populations of the '53-D and '54-D, you will see that they are also pretty tough to find in higher grades even with the higher mintages. The '56-D is a little easier to find, and the later dates get easier by the year until 1961, when quality control wound-up in the dumpster again. The '61-D & '62-D are also very tough in high grade as NO MS67 '61-D's or '62-D's exsist, and only 92 & 101 MS66s respectively. Obviously, many of these later dates did end-up in the melting pot. In time, I believe we will see these later-date "D" mints become hard to find keys. The '55-D is now just just starting to lead the rest of the "D"s to higher ground. JMHO.
If you're lookin' to start picking up some MS Washingtons, some of the common dates can be had for little more than grading fees(just check my auctions).
    Hope this helps.

    Marty,
Good luck with your submission. Many will be watchin'! image

  • Don Hi,
Looks like some other fool is going to pay $700. for a 55-D Washington.image And by the way the one I bought is ALL white, blast white. If I get a chance I will may post a picture of the coin. I hope you get $800. for your coin so the quarter guys have something else to talk about. image
  • Hey Washman,

I, and many others I'm sure, don't think you or the new high-bidder as fools. Just a few more realizing that if the 39-S and '40-D can command the prices that they do, the '55-D must be worth more. Coming years will tell! image
I appologize if I assumed wrong, but your statement "It was as white a 55-d as I had seen offered for sale..." lead me to believe that it wasn't quite blast white. In my auction desciption, I was trying to avoid being misleading in stating that it was blast white when I thought it wasn't. Lookin' back, I suppose it would have been better to err in that direction, though.

    Sorry again for my assumption.

No problem, I really didn't state that it was all white. I just thought that I would clear that up. I would prefer to have a pretty toned coin over a blast white coin but the 55-d usally does not come with pretty toning, so I would rather it be white than unattractive brown toning.

How does PCGS treat the Mint Set Toning, I have seen some toned hi grade Franklins, but how about on the Washington's???

  • Just to confirm...yes the coin did infact grade MS66, which I think it stupid, but oh well. I called Sandy from David Hall's office for him to look at it, about a week or so ago, still haven't heard. Hopefully I get an answer by then, but if not, I will get the coin from them at Long Beach and have it to show, if anyone is interested in seeing it, they can track me down Wed, Thurs, or Friday.

I'll be submitting one of my top (2) 1955(d) Wash Quarters at Long Beach also shooting for the MS67 grade. It should be back on Friday, if anyone wants to stop by and take a look at a super quality coin - regardless of what it grades. For what it is worth, I would be very comfortable grading this coin MS67. image Wondercoin
