Lookin' at the latest pops., I noticed that another MS66 was made, bringing the total to 76 now. I remember Morris (mnmcoin) thinkin' he had an MS67 in the makin' and expected the results shortly.
Morris:
Is this new MS66 the coin that you were refering to? If it is, I share your disappointment.
Heck, I would have been happy with a 66 considering all the '4s & '5s I've gotten back!
Will the "Holy Grail" ever be found?!?
Still a 66 available here.

In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
I couldn't even find the thread where he mentioned it!
Seems the MS66s are being realized for what they are. I just checked my listing and almost fell off the chair!

All of these are reasons that 55D's are tough in high grade.
Additionally, there were only 3.18M made and many were detroyed in the silver melts. So there just arent that many out there to begin with. It is the seventh lowest minted quarter in the series. Only 32D, 32S, 37S, 38S, 39S, and 40D have lower mintages.
It is a semi-key date!! The first MS67 will command thousands!!

As WWQ already stated, those are all reasons that the '55-D is so tough in high grades. However, I believe it had more to do with quality control at the Denver mint than the low mintage figure. I would think that with such a low mintage that they would have been saved by the rolls. That's not to say that many of these rolls weren't melted during the run-up of silver in '79-'80, but even the mint set examples lack the quality. If you look at the populations of the '53-D and '54-D, you will see that they are also pretty tough to find in higher grades even with the higher mintages. The '56-D is a little easier to find, and the later dates get easier by the year until 1961, when quality control wound-up in the dumpster again. The '61-D & '62-D are also very tough in high grade as NO MS67 '61-D's or '62-D's exsist, and only 92 & 101 MS66s respectively. Obviously, many of these later dates did end-up in the melting pot. In time, I believe we will see these later-date "D" mints become hard to find keys. The '55-D is now just just starting to lead the rest of the "D"s to higher ground. JMHO.
If you're lookin' to start picking up some MS Washingtons, some of the common dates can be had for little more than grading fees(just check my auctions).
Hope this helps.
Marty,
Good luck with your submission. Many will be watchin'!

Looks like some other fool is going to pay $700. for a 55-D Washington. And by the way the one I bought is ALL white, blast white. If I get a chance I will may post a picture of the coin. I hope you get $800. for your coin so the quarter guys have something else to talk about.
I, and many others I'm sure, don't think you or the new high-bidder as fools. Just a few more realizing that if the 39-S and '40-D can command the prices that they do, the '55-D must be worth more. Coming years will tell!
I appologize if I assumed wrong, but your statement "It was as white a 55-d as I had seen offered for sale..." lead me to believe that it wasn't quite blast white. In my auction desciption, I was trying to avoid being misleading in stating that it was blast white when I thought it wasn't. Lookin' back, I suppose it would have been better to err in that direction, though.
Sorry again for my assumption.

No problem, I really didn't state that it was all white. I just thought that I would clear that up. I would prefer to have a pretty toned coin over a blast white coin but the 55-d usally does not come with pretty toning, so I would rather it be white than unattractive brown toning.
