What card have you bid on the most?

Which is the most elusive star or common that you have bid on and lost via ebay time after time?

I lost another one tonight that I have tried for years to get and thought sure I would get today for a good price. I sniped at 6 seconds and someone else sniped after me! I bet its someone on this board!

My goal- even though I am doing a raw set has been to buy quality and a price I can afford. I need a couple stars/commons to finish my set and the snider/hodges/fords are the annoying, moderatly priced stars that I can't seem to get in nice condition, at a good price. But I will keep trying!!! I shall not be deterred! image

So I ask the board...which card have you found most annoying/toughest to get?

In case anyone is wondering...

Any 1952 Topps card on eBay. I have never won a single one. Regardless of condition. Just can't get them.

That 54 Snider is a nice card - just make a nice 150% SMR bid in the waning seconds next time.

BTW - it wasn't me who won it image

If I ever saw a nice 1952 Topps Snider PSA 5 I would bid - one of my favorite cards of all time, and certainly the nicest looking 52 Topps card.

  • 1420- Thanks for the advice but 150% SMR is a little much...

The reason I lose is because I am desparate to win at a good price. I could have bid $200 for it and probably won....but that would defeat the purpose.

  • Ahhh, you didn't want that Snider. It's from Canada. That's OPC, right?image

I used to bid on '63 #92-Hector Lopez (Yankees) frequently. Lost many times when it went for $55, then $80, then $94, then over $100. Finally won one a few weeks ago at under $35. Must've faked all the other bidders right out of their jock straps.

Hey, wait a minute. Maybe that WAS a wiwag card.image

    1979 Molitor # 24 ( first solo card ) in PSA 9

Over the past two years I think only 5 or 6 have come up on ebay. Final prices were $ 87.00 low to $ 121.00 high. The SMR lists the card ar $ 45 in 9 ??? I once bid up to $ 91.00 on one that went for about $ 97.00. Centering on this item is very tough to get nice. I have several PSA 7s and 8s of which none is even 55-45, I do have a SGC 8.5 which is also at least 65-35 top-bottom. While I'm not a Beckett booster by any means, in their Vintage Mag. they show a more realistic price of this particular card in graded as 70 -120 for mint copies.
This aint no party,... this aint no disco,.. this aint no fooling around.

If you are interested in raw, I've had success on Yahoo auctions with 52's. Bill Henderson ususally runs auctions for raw 52's in lots of 10-12 for around $50. $5 a card for 52's isn't bad, and they run about G/VG. AND...there are never any bids, so you are pretty much guaranteed to win the auction with the opening bid of $49.99.

I have over 25% of the set, and I've picked up about 15% of those from Bill's Yahoo Auctions.

Collector of baseball PSA sets from the 1970's & hockey rookie cards; big New York Rangers fan (particularly now that they are sleeping with the enemy with Holik and Kaspiritus). Also starting to collect 53 Bowman Color as I think they are the most beautiful cards I have seen.

man, that alanmarcsmith doesn't mess around, murcerfan. he bought a beautiful psa 8 bobby orr rc last week and a friend told me he also bought the last psa 8 orr rc that was on ebay. almost anything he bids on he winds up winning. a psa 9 koufax rc and a bvg 8.5 '52 topps reese readily come to mind as two of his more notable recent acquisitions.

1965 Willie Stargell...it is one of the few 1965 cards that has gone UP in price over the past year in PSA 8 condition.

  • I never seem to have any luck winning a psa 8 1971 Topps Nate Archibald rc... the last time I threw down a $120+ bid which was about double the last several loses I had. Anyways, I still lost it. It's just not meant to be.

Murcerfan while you are up can you get me a white russian?

Here was the original post over at the Network 54 boards:

Here are four cards for the Topps 1957 set, all PSA 10 and all deserving of this grade. Each one is spectacular. However, each card books for $8! You could go to a major card show, and get a spectacular card of any of these guys for under $20. You probably won't get as good as here, but it would save you $700-$800. I realize that one can buy what one wants, but these are incredible prices (in my opinion) for common commons.

Here is one of the responses:

    T206Monsta

It's the PSA holder...that commands such a high price. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you believe the seller did not think to resubmit them to SGC, SCD,GEM,PRO, etc...before listing on eBay. Man those Network 64 guys are so ahead of the curve.

  • The card I can never seem to obtain is the 1983 Topps PSA 10. I could have bought it tonight. But yesterday I bought a car. Put down more money then need, made the first payment and paid for insurance. I didnt want to be broke so I settled for the 1983 Fleer PSA 10. I bought it tonight. BTW prices seem to be going back up on Boggs material ...high end anyway.

    Chris,

A month ago I would have said the same thing. You must have missed the auction several weeks ago. I finally got this one in PSA 8 - paid less than the last 3 or 4 went for - $40 or so. image

I guess the card that goes to the top of my list now is the 1970 #1 World Champions in PSA 8. Rarely comes up on ebay and goes for multiples of SMR.

    JEB.
  • I think i won the 1971 psa 8 archibald your talking about, i won it with a 150 dollar bid which is way over any quoted prices i see.

  • I can never get Koufax PSA 7+ 1960 or 1961 cards or any Mantle PSA 7+ cards. Count me in with all of the other guys who just want the card at dirt-cheap prices and don't want to use "buy it now"

I have a happy ending to report. Not long after saying I have never won a 52 Topps card on eBay before, I won two! The first one was a high number no less and the second one was a common. I was happy to have them both for a combined $27. Woo hoo!
