Questions about set registry: player collections

Hi everyone. I'm new and I have a few questions about how things work here. The rules page does't help very much and if you all could help me out I'd appreciate it. Let me begin by saying that I am most interested in player collections so most of my questions will revolve around that topic.

First of all, how is a set/player collection chosen to be listed on the registry? Is it based only on the number of people who request it or are there other factors? For instance, I see there are player collections registered for Matt Willams and Will Clark but not for Barry Bonds or Sammy Sosa. That doesn't make much sense to me if it is based on interest alone. The Will Clark collection doesn't even have a card in it. Maybe it's new, I didn't look very closely but do you see my confusion here? The Matt Williams collection is 20% complete but only has cards listed up to 1999.

If I request a player collection to be registered what are my chances of ever seeing it listed? I already have the beginnings of a very nice PSA graded collection of one player and would very much like to list it on here. Actually, this is one of the main reasons I signed up with membership here, 10 free grades means 10 more cards for my collection!! I'm sure most people could care less about this guy right now but I'm not too worried about that. It will be an impressive collection if I can pull it off and maybe it will get others interested in similar collections. He's still young and unproven so it may be a waste of time (and money) but so far I am enjoying it thoroughly. I'm going for every Drew Brees card from 2001 RC and earlier. Inserts, parallels, autos, game used, base cards, whatever is out there. Finding these cards raw is difficult enough. Most of them are serial numbered under 500 and not cheap! I know this pales in comparison to the vintage set collections but I'm not quite ready for that. I requested it for registration and put in three of my PSA graded cards. Those 3 together have a total RAW population of 225. Hopefully that will impress them enough to get the ball rolling. Who knows? I guess that's why I'm posting here.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, MLS

  • MLS,

Sets are listed on the registry based on how many requests and when the set was requested. The sets that have the most requested are added first, then the remaining sets are added in the order they were requested. I counted 45 player sets requested above yours, so unless someone else requests a Dree Brees set or you send BJ the compositions of both the Basic and Master sets you will have a long wait. PSA recently sent an email to all members about Player sets and what should be in the Basic and Master sets. mikeschmidt posted this email here. It is very time consuming to create the player sets, if you help BJ with this it will get your set added much quicker. BJ can be contacted at BJ@collectors.com, send her an email asking her what she needs to get the Dree Brees player set listed quicker.
  • Thanks for the reply, I just emailed BJ.

From reading through the boards here I realize that almost every one of you are putting together vintage sets and vintage player/team sets. Do you guys see anything wrong with a new category of player sets for rookie year only for modern players? With all the different brands out there these days and all the different parallels and various game used and autos I think allowing collections for only a rookie year is acceptable for current players. I haven't finished my Brees list yet but there will likely be over 300 different cards with quite a few having print runs below 500 and that is just the year 2001 cards! I haven't even bothered to buy anything after that and when the 2003 cards come out there will probably be nearly 1000 different cards on the market for him. I like a challenge but that's just insane. As of now there are close to 160 different Brees 2001 cards graded by PSA. I think this type of set would turn out well and maybe eventually more people would be interested. Even if you think modern cards are junk, is this a decent idea or am I wasting my time? Thanks
  • I would think that some of the rookie sets of modern players may make the 1971 topps set look like a small set.image

  • MLS,

For modern players I think rookie sets are a great idea. There is already one listed on the registry, the Vince Carter rookie set. That set only includes the base rookie cards. I think the same concept of Basic/Master sets could be used for rookie sets too. One rookie set could have just the base rookie cards, or hobby accepted rookie cards, and then another set would include all of the player's first year cards.
  • Look closer at the Matt Williams & the Will Clark sets. You will see I have one registered under both. And have for quite some time.
