Star Wars

I've been working on nice sets of the original 77-78 Topps Star Wars cards for some time and only just now realized that PSA grades them. They even have a Registry entry for them, although there are no major players in that niche yet. Non-sports are hardly ever discussed on this board, and when they are they are usually sets of an older vintage. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or experience with these sets, or, better yet, any sources for them. Seeing as the baseball sets from 1976-1980 are getting more play on ebay and the registry, AFAIK, it seems like if any non-sport set could take off, this would be the one. PSA graded cards rarely appear on ebay (though there are 4 tempting ESB 9s right now).

For my part, it seems these cards were produced on a very thin and fragile stock, moreso I think than was used for baseball, and their colored borders are especially susceptible to the usual problems. Among the hundreds of cherry-picked cards I have, I think I've only got one with a decent shot at a 9 and maybe 20 8s.

What a great idea. Looking back, I remember enjoying the Star Wars cards as a kid together with many other non-sport sets from the late 70s to early 80s (Mork & Mindy, Moonraker, Superman, to name a few).

However, my personal all time favorite non-sport set is the KISS Donruss 1978 set. I am in the process of gathering cards from this set to submit. I figure having a PSA graded set of this issue will be an ultimate combination of three of my favorite things (PSA graded cards, KISS and trading cards). I am finding on this issue that the stock is terrible. I never really noticed such a thing before as a kid! 9s and 10s will be tough; 8s will be more than welcome. I can, however, see my set being made up of many 7s. Due to the terrible stock, I am setting my minimum requirement at a 7.

It should be a fun set to put together and is only a modest 132 cards (a nice difference from the "monster" 752 card 1971 Topps PSA graded set I am trying to piece together). All in all, I would like to see the non-sport market take off. There are some truly great non-sport cards out their. I have to go now and spit blood and breathe fire....
• I've comtemplated working on a Star Wars set myself. First I want to put together a Mars Attacks set, which is the Holy Grail of non-sports sets in my opinion. They are great cards. After that I will probably look to 1967 Star Trek and then Star Wars. Decisions - Decisions - Decisions!
Working on 1962 mid grade Mars Attacks.

Yeah, I still debating on putting together a set of 1st series Garbage Pail Kids. Those were HUGE when I was a kid. As for Star Wars, those are awesome cards but good luck finding PSA 9's from those. They look as tough as 75 Topps baseball. Now would probably be a great time to make the set because if Non Sport PSA stuff ever really catches on, you don't want to have to get in bidding wars. I say invest in PSA 9's of those cards and you might be sitting on a gold mine someday.
• Hi,

My sets are listed as The ToyDisplay collection on the registry. I have thousands of raw cards from the SW ESB and ROTJ sets. The SW cards are terrible to find good examples they are always off centre, rough cut, out of register, print dots, everything. The ESB and ROTJ are easier to find in higher grade. All the cards I have are ones that I have submitted myself. I remember seeing a SW Han Solo PSA 9 card on Ebay a year or so back with a buy it now of $1000+ but it didn't sell LOL!. I am surprised that they do not have a bigger following. I have a pile that will get submitted if they have a nother non-sports registry special soon. I keep meaning to get more graded but have attacks of laziness.

Always buying if anyone has any to sell.

Matt

May the force be with you.

• I have been becoming increasingly interested in PSA grade non-sport cards. I have been following the presence of graded non-sport cards on ebay for a while now, and the market has really taken off in the last year. A year ago there was only a handful of PSA graded non-sport cards on ebay at any given time, now in the non-sport card section you can usually find over 100.

Just took a look. There were 92 PSA graded non-sportscards currently listed.

Check out the LORD OF THE RINGS AUTOGRAPH CARDS IN PSA 8. Currently in the hundreds of dollars.

Very surprised at some of the prices currently bid on mid - grade material.
PSA 6 Gilligan's Island from the 60's commanding $40 +.

The Wackypackages sure bring back memories. I think I'm showing my age. image

In all, it looks like a real untapped market.

Those LOTR autos are something. My local shop has a couple Two Towers boxes that are actually priced lower than ebay right now, and the autos a generous at one-per-box. But like all other modern sets, you can get the base set for about 10% of the box price. All the value is in one or two cards. Still, like they say on theonion.com, LOTR may become the new Star Wars, and autographs of the stars would be nice to have.

Dare I say it... I'm doing 1999 Pokemon English Basic Holofoils.

Heaven help me if they don't.

Would be glad to hear from anyone who has English Basic holos in PSA-10 for sale... especially that $@#&%!! Nidoking card.

• Is everyone aware of that green series c3p0 error card? It's c3p0 meets john holmes... if you don't know what I am talking about, do an ebay search... type in "c3p0 error" and check current and past auctions...
• ydsotter,
I just watched a special about myths, true or false, on MTV. And they did a thing about that C3PO card. They even contacted Topps about that card. Funny stuff!

bengineno9, what did they say about it?

As for the Pokemon cards, you are absoluety correct. Many people my age are really into the Garbage pail kids and boxes go for big money nowadays. People really become sentimental about their childhood. That's one reason why vintage sports cards are so big today.

Speaking of MTV, I just found a few Yo MTV Raps cards the other day...Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Kool Moe Dee were all in there. I don't know what possessed me to buy them, maybe just curious. Maybe I'll slab the Vanilla Ice.
• Wabbitt.

Basically the C3P0 card was a big hoax. I guess someone from Topps altered this card so it looked like C3P0 had a huge shiny erection. It's nothing to graphic but its noticeable. I don't know the card #, but the card has a green border.
