NOT a loaded question- I really want to know as I'm not well versed on the Platinum coins- - - What do you look for to distinguish between an MS69 and a 70?
Is it luster? I can't imagine it's strike only because the 69 needs a full one and I'd imagine platinum coinage strikes up well.

Pat, here is the definiton of MS70 from the PCGS web site.

This is for "Mint State" (the grade) and "70" (the numerical designation of that grade). A perfect coin! Even with 5X magnification there are no marks, hairlines or luster breaks in evidence. The luster is vibrant, the strike is razor-sharp, and the eye appeal is the ultimate. Note: Minor die polish and light die breaks are not considered to be defects on circulation strike coins.

  • Platinum is actually one of the harder coinage metals to strike. The 1 oz proofs are struck an amazing NINE times to bring out the detail.

I don't know what they do with the MS coins, but the ones I've seen have all been well-struck.

As for the difference between MS69 and MS70... my opinion on 69/70 is there's nothing much but the number on label, if they're both nice examples.

Actually, my experience with the platinum coins was somewhat different. I recently submitted a few hundred capsuled proofs and got back -1- PCGS-PR70DCAM (a $25 coin) in the batch. With my10 power I examined each and every coin slabbed by PCGS. To my surprise, IMHO, there were marks on every PR69 coin to support the grade, while the PR70 was flawless. When looked at it side by side with the pile of PR69's, the coin was incredible to stare at - perfect "watery" platinum surfaces that were nearly hypnotic to me! Now, understand, I am personally not a big fan of these coins, or these ultra-modern proof collections (and never have been). But, this coin was "perfection in platinum" and I greatly appreciated it as such. That appreciation would have been far less I believe, if I did not have a large batch of PR69 coins to lay side by side and compare.

And, I tip my hat to PCGS for taking the time to locate that one "needle in a haystack" coin, as well as professionally grading this batch so perfectly. image Wondercoin

  • Mitch,

I'm surprised that you're "not a big fan of these coins, or these ultra-modern proof collections (and never have been)".
I think that the 5-year "Landscapes of America" proof platinum coins are some of the prettiest the mint has made. Plus, the one year only reverse designs made for some pretty low mintages. The five different American scenes are really neat,... and where else can you find an alligator on a U.S. coin?!? image
I made a point of ordering the 1/2 ounce proofs early-on each year. I just sent in the six(including the 1st year original reverse) to get slabbed. "Crazy fingers" crossed! image

Sorry, Bear, for extending the tangent. image
Your MS70 Dolley is on "her" way, though! image

Well, up until last year, anyway. image I'm putting together a set of the proofs myself. I'm hoping somebody makes an album that I can stick the mint capsules into.

Still waiting to see if they actually end the series as scheduled, have you heard anything?
  • Supercoin,

I haven't heard anything official yet. I did "hear"(see) a rumor that they were thinkin' of ending the entire platium coinage. Not bringin' in enough $, I guess. image
It would be neat if they reverted back to the original reverse for a final year. Sort o' like a pair of "bookends" to close-out the set. image
