Jefferson Nickel mintage 1655

Hello, I have a question about Jefferson Nickels. I thought you forum members would be the most knowledgeable. I have a proof Jefferson Nickel that is a cam on both sides. It is a 1971 No S variety. It has grown a very small spot on the cheek in the US mint holder. It is very light but noticeable. Can this be dipped off without ruining the coin in your opinion? Should I get it graded?

Thanks in Advance.

Mark

    I have a 1983 no S dime with the same problem. I'm thinking about sending it to NCS for review. If it were a cheaper coin, I'd try dipping it myself but I'm not comfortable doing that on a pricey one.

  • Those no-S proofs are neat. If cameo on both sides and no hairlines I would consider slabbing. I think it would have to be at least a 67 Cam or a 68* to be worth slabbing. I haven't checked prices lately but there should be a little more interest in the with varieties registry sets now that more varieties have been added. I am not sure what a no-S proof set in original packaging would bring, that is something to find out...

    edited to add: I forgot to say if you think it will grade high enough NCS can do wonders on Nickel. I tried them once and was happy with the results.
  • The last time I looked, bid was $800 and $880 ask for a no-s set.

    Coinworld trends has a no-s in 68-dcam listed at $500 ???????????????, That's the cue for Russ's laugh track.image

    ..........i can't imitate Russ' laugh, but at $500 for a PR68DCAM i'll take as many as you can get me. that seems about the best example for that guide being out of step with reality as i've heard to date!!! the pricing on the set is a tad high also, unless they've gone up recently. i'd say $550-$600 is more realistic for a problem free set, and that isn't the case here. NCS needs to at least evaluate the coin while still in the mint packaging. i'd assume they can stabilize it and most probably remove all but a trace.

  • Mark,
    You stated that the spot was light, I hope it isn't green.
    Copper/nickel is tricky to dip { DON"T}
    Have it slabbed as is or get professional help as stated above.
    Al,
    That price I quoted was from a greysheet of 12/13/02 and had a +.
