Would PCGS bag these coins?

The reason i ask about the nickel is because of the scratch on the face, Also post what grade you think they would get.

and the rim ding on the Half

The Liberty nickel should be fine, and grade out (speculating based on your photo) MS63.
(Liberty nickel specialists will have a more definite answer.)

    the Bust half?
I think it's too bright to slab, but the rim ding is deal breaker. It's just too much of one.

Here is a recently graded Bust Half to compare with.

"The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD GOD Almighty."
  • The 1821 is a bag for sure because its to bright to have an original surface.

Just sent off another bust half for grading. I have a few toned Morgans that will go next.

  • The nickel was graded as MS-64 by the dealer (the scratch on the cheek looks worse on the scan than it really is). The bust half was graded AU-50 (though I got it for a really low price because of the nick). I'm curious what you mean by "it's too bright to have an original surface." Does that mean it looks like it's been cleaned? dipped? something else?

We wouldn't bag the Lib nickel because of the scratch, or the Bust half because of the rim nick. Can't tell about the surfaces from the scan though. If they were altered or harshly cleaned, then it's bag time.

  • mbbiker,

If you want both coins slabbed at the highest possible grade, I suggest that you submit the coins through an authorized PCGS dealer who has a very large monthly submission volume. In my experience and opinion, results vary depending on your position within the industry (some of us call it a hobby). You may want to find a PNG member who can submit the coins for you.

    Yes Russ, I did.

The 1903 is attractive...it may not be a MS64 because of the two scratches, but it has great fields and is still worthy of an MS63.

The half... no chance and I would not waste the money. If you want attritube the coin to the appropriate Overton number, send the coin to ANACs, but I feel comfortable predicting it would be net graded.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

Here is my Bust Half that graded XF45 by PCGS --- results just came back last Friday. Yours seems to have a bit more detail, so I guess it could be AU50, BUT I concur with the general opinion that it will get BB for harsh cleaning. Also, I don't really see any original mint luster in the scan and it could have all been scrubbed off. Mine was probably lightly cleaned once, as many of these are, but still has original luster in the obverse stars and reverse motto.
