I need an official response from BJ on this one.

What is the official ruling on what is the difference between "Modern" and "Classic" coinage ? Is it a set year, or does
each type coin have a different year. Anyone else have any ideas?

There is no set definition, some people make the break at 1964, some consider the break to be at the end of Barber coinage, and others even earlier. The real question is, what is your issue?

P.S. PCGS thinks that the last year of the 20th century was 1999, so don't expect a resonable answer from them.

    stewart,

You obviously haven't had any coins graded recently. The date has been pushed back from 1970 to 1965 in response to NGC's push back to 1950.

  • I think the type of coin should determine if its a modern or a classic, not by the date. some coins like the Rossies,
Jeffersons, the Kennedy's fall into both pre1965 and post 1965. It just makes it harder to submit coins.Seperate submissions for the same type coin. (More money for PCGS) seperate postage and more submission fees.

    Walt,

Your reasoning seems quite logical, but that's not how PCGS pricing is determined.

    Stewart,

    Sorry.

Actually, PCGS is $10 for moderns and NGC is 1955, not 1950.

Ha... maybe PCGS has been indiscriminatory in their discrimination. They discriminate against all people equally!

    Walt,

Is your question in reference to submissions? If so, modern coinage is considered 1965 to present.

If your question is in reference to the set registry, the date varies. Modern type sets, for example, run from 1950 to present.
