Merc Folks and Others take a look at this coin.

Hey guys/gals I have had this coin for some time but it still bugs me because of the Tone pattern. Is this a doctored coin ? I have never seen one that looks like this dime. Don't hold back as I really do not know about this coin.

I put this on the coin forum but usually you guys do not respond over there. image

Interesting look. It couldn't be doctored because it would have never made it into a holder. Maybe it is just some blending in the base metals. I have a 1954-S Lincoln Cent in which has gold and green streaks running through the metal. I pulled it out of a roll, sent it to PCGS and it graded MS65RD. I thought for sure it would be body bagged, so based on them grading it--it must be okay?

The streaky stuff on the obverse does not appear to be in the metal. Really strange stuff. Putty was already mentioned on the Coin Forum. Just could be or maybe a chemical reaction.

I wonder what it looked like before it was slabbed? Is it in an older holder? Maybe someone who thinks they are a doctor messed with it and really ruined the coin? If the coin was dipped or placed in some chemical and then the dip or chemicals not removed from the coin, I suppose the chemical could have continued to work on the coin. Too bad if that is the case.

  • Ken,

I collect mercs, and I've never seen anything like that either. What does the coin grade? If it's gem+, you might have something you should send in to be checked. For some reason, bondo comes to mind! image

Edited: I see you posted the grade in the other forum as MS65. Send it in.

Regardless of what PCGS slabbed that coin, methinks you have a claim on the grade guarantee ... appears foreign to me.

I believe it may have been dipped and not
rinsed very well and the chemical continued to work
I have seen some dipped coins develope spots
    if not rinsed

  • Ken,
It looks to be a botches cleaning job. Even on the reverse around the words "states" there seems to be something going on there also.
  • Ken,
I have to agree with Tim, it looks to have been dipped and not rinsed properly and the chemical has reacted in the holder. Still growing perhaps, by spring you will have a garden that holder..LOL

    Hi Ken,

A canidate for NCS? I know you love toning, but you may have something that is active and needs to be stopped before it does any or further damage. Has it changed any since you've had it?

  • Looks to me like the grader may have had a cold that day. Isn't there some nice original colors under those mucus clouds?

Just a coinsidence, but I just added a pearly-white '28-S to my set and passed Pat. image
Sorry, Pat. I gotta get that signal fixed! image

    Ken,

That dime looks original to me, but something got spilled on it to create those blotches around the neck, IGWT, and below the Y. A candidate for NCS (if it isn't cost prohibitive), or maybe PCGS will refund the value of the coin, if they consider it to be doctored.

What does NCS charge to "conserve" a coin?

  • Ken,
I would call pcgs and tell them about this one,
they should either fix the problem or buy the coin
if it is chemical the reaction may continue and
things could get a lot worse, I believe that is a $400
    coin

Going to a Coin Show this weekend and I think I will take the 28S with me. There should be a couple of Dealers there that really know Mercs and a live seeing it in person opinion can be had. Too bad these things have to be kept away from home and only get to see them every once in awhile. I have been keeping my eye on two other coins in the collection also. I swear the 24S I have is changing color. Seems like it is going from a almost white coin to a goldish/brown coin. The 26S also has some suspect stuff on it also but it seems to be stable.

Does anyone else have any of these problems ? Maybe I am just a Putz when it comes to buying the harder dates.
