Take a Look and Give your Impression about this coin.

There has been a lot of talk lately about Doctors and AT. This coin is the only one I own that really has me puzzled. First off I have not seen another Merc with these colors or the pattern that this coin displays. Maybe you cannot tell from the pictures but it is damn pretty in person. The only problem I have though is if it is Real Toning. I really do not know on this coin. Give me your impression of this coin.

Thanks.

I don't know, Fairlaneman, you know your dimes better than anyone but that coin sure looks like something's wrong with it. Even to the point of looking like it may have been puttied on the obverse.

I hope I'm way off base here and dead wrong.

-I sure like that blazing red rim toning on your ICON though!!

Pat I think you and I are looking at the same thing that really throws me on this coin. Above and through In God We Trust and in the right field is really strange looking IMO. Have never seen this on a Merc.

    Is it slabbed???
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Well, I don't like it and I'm glad you don't either.
It looks like you have an issue with PCGS.
Someone tried to magically 'erase' a couple of hairlines or tics (probably tics) there and also above the designer's initial and also in spots on the portrait.

Unfortunutely it is difficult to remove putty from a silver coin (it removes easier from gold). It could also be thumbing, but looks too "thick".
    What a shame.
I bet it was still choice (63) had it just been left alone.

    The reverse wasn't spared either.

  • If that is putty, I wonder how long it took for it to become visible. I’d send it to PCGS...
  • Ken,

Did someone sell it to you looking like that, or did you buy it raw and have it slabbed yourself and it "turned"??

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

This coin was in the Slab when I bought it. Probably I should have sent it back but I just do not like doing that when a coin is purchased from a well know National Dealer. I feel they should know real from unreal and I should know also but this one has me stumped for sure.

As I said it is a pretty coin in person but the wonder about being doctored still is in the back of the mind. If it was a NGC coin I would have no problem with sending it to them as I have done it with a couple of coins that were not Market Worthy. I have No Clue what PCGS would do as I have never sent a problem coin to them. My thought is that this coin is not a Market Worthy coin if I was tempted to sel it.

  • It could be dip residue from an incomplete rinseing.
