Should it be a private auction?

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
I have a coin that I will be listing on Ebay over the weekend with a worth of about $15000 (1874-CC dime EF). I've never considered using it before, but should I make the bidders' identities private?
As I see it, pros are:
1. Some bidders may prefer remaining anonymous.
Cons:
1. It's rarely used on Ebay, and may turn off some bidders, for one reason or another (unfamiliarity, suspicions, etc.)
Comments?
Thanks,
Barry

  • my opinion is that if someone is going to buy off of ebay and spend 5,000 or more then they are comfortable with Ebay and don't mind having the identities hidden and they know how to scope out a buyer by the feedback.

I would look at the complete auctions of Anaconda as he has had a lot of high priced coins sold.

  • If I were bidding on it to resell, maybe even on eBay, I would want my identity kept private. There's nothing as stupid looking as the guy who buys (on eBay) lots of empty cigar boxes and lots of wheat pennies, then turns around and lists auctions of "Unsearched Estate Wheat Cent Hoards in old Cigar Boxes". I really do hate that. That's enough rambling for now.
    I have icon envy.
  • I've always found that active bidding has always been higher on the private auctions. Not even close.
  • There are plenty of people who seem to get uptight at the thought of private Ebay auctions -

My sense is the people who get uptight are never the people who actually bid big money anyway, so I don't really see a negative in doing a private auction.

  • I don't like private auctions, and won't bid on anything in them. It's too easy for a seller to shill them.
There was an 1874CC in EF on Ebay a couple years ago with a starting bid of $9000. It didn't get any bids. Was this yours?
How about putting a pic of the 1874CC dime here for the members to see?

    Ray,
No that wasn't mine. I did sell an 1874-CC G/VG last month on Ebay. It did much better than I expected. Here's your preview. I'll be listing it Sunday night.

Now that is a rare coin. And purdy, too!
