And on the 48th day, PCGS says "Let there be Grades"

Somewhat surprised by how they viewed these Jeffersons. In the end what I have are a few coins for the Registry, a few for my "Grading Education" set and one----the 1936 Buffalo----for my future "Collectors Club Free-Submission AU58 Set" which results from the fact that all of my freebies have been returned as AU58 or B/B. Either I'm that good or they're more consistent then we think!!!image

My pre-submission estimate and comments are in bold.

1---60080892---1938 5C--------PR65 PR66 with nice tone.
2---60080893---1962 5C--------PR67CA PR68DC, I think they missed the designation.
3---60080894---1967 5C SMS--MS67 MS66CAM for a raw pepperdoodles gem!!
4---60080895---1971-S 5C-----PR67CA PR68DCAM-------no comment.
5---60080896---1973-S 5C-----PR69DC PR69DCAM, and we agree at last!!
6---60080897---1973-S 5C-----PR69DC PR69DCAM, ditto above.
7---60080898---1975-S 5C-----PR68DC PR69DCAM, a no doubter. I think they did this to spite me.
8---60080899---1936 5C--------AU58 MS63 with beautiful tone. At least they didn't B/B it!!

And on the 49th day, PCGS said, "Let there be higher grades!"
    And there was much rejoicing.
    For it was good.
And the wails of those with low grades from the 48th day were drowned out by the "Cha-Ching" of cash registers belonging to those of higher grades on the 49th day....
    And there was much rejoicing.

  • Al,

It seems like I'm always at least one grade higher when grading my own coins and a grade or two lower when grading someone elses...:-)

    hey dan

that's a tendancy that i'm making progress on moving away from. i wrangled with the earlier dates because of color, so at least that's a good sign. and i'm admittedly lacking in hairline detection so the 73's and 75 provide hope. oh yeah, and i even undergraded one!!image

    Yea, mine!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Setting: It is early dawn in the PCGS grading room. All lights are out and suddenly the door is kicked open. Enter a dark figure wearing a new crown. Lights are turned on and there is a LOUD crack(!) of the whip.

King (oops wrong title Pres.) Hall: Get up! Everybody back to work.

Grader#1 (rolling out from under his desk and tossing his pillow to awaken Grader#2): Already? What time is it? Seems like we just finished grading that last batch!

Pres. Hall: Perhaps you didn't get the most recent memo. I'm the new King here, oops correction, that would be President of this joint. And unless you lazy oafs want to end up like that Bowers fellow, you'll get up and get to grading.

Grader#2: (meekly with head bowed) Excuse me sir.

    A whip cracks(!) again.

    Pres. Hall: What is it?

Grader#2: (head still bowed) May we have a few moments in the Men's Room to do the morning ritual and brush our teeth? We won't be long.....

Pres. Hall: Well be dang quick about it!

    Grader#1: Yes sir!

Graders scurry from the room, much like puppies with tails tucked between their legs.

A few minutes go by and the graders re-enter the grading room.

Pres. Hall: All right. Get those lamps cranked up and get to work!

    Grader#1: Yes sir!

Pres. Hall: You'll be on the clock. No more than 5 seconds per coin.

    All Graders: Groan....

Pres. Hall: No whining! Those belly-achers on the CU Forum are complaining about the new time frames for the Economy grade. Now get that Keets order out and be snappy. I'll not give them the satisfaction of receiving any FREE grades for taking longer than 50 days! And pop him with a AU or two, just to keep him in line.

Curtains close. End of Scene 1.

Congratulations Keets. That was a nice submission!

Criminy ... 48 days, a couple of nice scores, no fingerprints and no bags ... who do you know, Al?

  • Buffs are tough. If they were lightly circulated and have toned over the wear it takes a keen eye to spot the difference. You have to look for that slight color difference on the high points.

i think some of the difficulty i have with the AU's is discerning circulation wear from light rub or weak strike. i don't really believe PCGS hands out the grade intentionally, there's method to the madness that i'm not quite experienced enough to notice. nothing to do but look at more coins, and then look at still more. image
