New Message to PSA Set Registry Members from BJ and Joe

Dear Set Registry Member,

The PSA Set Registry has seen tremendous growth in the last 6 months.
We have all been very excited about what has been happening in the
Registry and believe we are building something that is really unique
and fun for collectors. While the growth has been wonderful, it has
also brought some problems which we would like to address so that all
of you know where we are with some of these issues.

Master player sets in the PSA Set Registry are constantly being
updated with new cards being added to the sets as they are graded.
This process seems to be working well. However, we have discovered
some inconsistencies in the basic player sets, which are supposed to
be a set number of cards. The basic sets should consist of only
mainstream cards with no League Leader or special cards. However, in
some of the sets, these type of cards have inadvertently been added.
In the coming weeks, we will be refining the basic sets and making any
additions or deletions that are appropriate. We feel that it is very
important, especially with the incredible growth the Set Registry is
experiencing, that we try to maintain as much consistency as we can.

There are still some player sets that have not undergone the change to
basic and master. These sets will be addressed as soon as possible.
Once this has been achieved, we will then put all of our efforts into
getting the player sets added that are on the request list. We know
that some of you have been waiting for months for these set composites
to go online and we sincerely apologize for the delay.

With regards to the team sets, those sets should include all the
players and team cards from that team within that year including LL
and special cards. In most cases, if you request a new team set, we
usually also ask that you supply the list of cards for that set. It
is important that you supply a complete list. To double check, you
may want to present your list to the forum and ask others to review
the list for you before sending it to us. We would like to see these
team sets go online as complete as possible so that there are no
surprise additions to the set later on.

There are few other outstanding issues which include changing some of
the sets that have a large number of variation cards to basic and
master sets and also the addition of checklist cards to some of the
sets that were left off when we originally loaded the composites. We
will try our best to address these issues in the coming months.

Every month, we will delete sets that are over a year old and less than
10% complete which have not been updated for over a year. If for some
reason you are maintaining a set that you have never sent in for
validation, the system does not indicate to us if you have been updating
it. Therefore, if the set falls into the less than 10% complete
category and is over a year old, it will be deleted. If you do not want
your set deleted, please send it through for validation at your earliest
convenience.

The last issue is one that you can help us with. There has been a
dramatic increase in the number of customer service email we have been
receiving. 90% of this is due to registrants not deleting cards from
their sets and sending their set in for validation when the card is sold.
If you don't delete your card, the new owner cannot register it. When
this occurs the new owner contacts us and we must then contact the
previous owner, sometimes several times. All of this takes time and
resources. It is important that as a Set Registry member you update
your set frequently. Your cooperation will allow us more time to
continue to enhance and improve the Set Registry.

As always, we appreciate any feedback or suggestions you would like to
share with us. Thanks for all of your support and enthusiasm and please
let us know if you have any questions.

    My thoughts:

I have never had a problem in deleting a card from the Registry when I have sold it. In fact -- the greatest problem I have had is buyers who have purchased cards that were deleted from my Registry set -- yet still unable to upload the cards to their own set. Each time I resolved the situation with Gayle w/o a problem. Nonetheless -- I can understand the time/frustration since I did everything I should have done in a timely manner.

Basic and Master Player Sets: I can understand the concern around this issue. I think that James Kendall and myself have helped do a decent enough job on the Mike Schmidt Registries. The Mickey Mantle Registry seems to be firmly in place, too. This situation corrects itself over time -- and I think the biggest annoyance here are adding all of those new oddball cards to the Master Registry after you have them graded for the first time.

    Agreed...

Of the last 6 times that I've been contacted because someone couldn't load a card into their set registry - only once did it turn out to be a card in my own registered set. (AND THATS BECAUSE I ACCIDENTLY SOLD A CARD I THOUGHT WAS A DOUBLE!!!) But, the other 5 times, they were 8's that I had upgraded to 9's and although I deleted them and posted the 9 in its place - the registry still held on to both!

If they could find the registry glitch that is causing this, I think they'd find that 70% of these calls go away!

Bravo! One of my major complaints about the registry has been lack on consistency for player sets. They addressed the LL card issue, but what about Tiffanies? They are in some sets and not in others. And for my Marcus Allen set, they inexplicably failed to include the base 1990 Pro Set, but added in the 1990 Pro Set Super Bowl MVPs insert and the 1990 Pro Set Super Bowl 160 seperately issued oddball set. They also added in a couple of team cards and "in action" cards which were not on my proposal spreadsheet, but I assume will be going away now.

While we're at it, I think some official guidance on weighting would be nice. The rules say the weights are based on SMR for a PSA 8, but at what scale? It's obviously not linear or lots of sets would have one 10 and the rest 1's. Also, what if the card is not listed in SMR? Using the Marcus Allen master set for an example, the 1996 Select Certified Mirror Gold is weighted 10, and the 1997 Playoff Contenders Clash Blue is weighted 1. Neither is in SMR, but the raw Beckett prices are $40 for each. My proposed weighting had them weighted the same, and I'm confused to the rationale behind the final weighting.

No such details will spoil my plans...
  • I'm glad to see some standards set for player sets, and that the remaining player sets will be converted over to Basic and Master set form. I've been meaning too work on changing the Don Mattingly player set to Basic/Master set form, but I just haven't had the time, and my pop report subscription ran out and I have yet to renew it.

I would also like to see the Tiffinay and Glossy cards addressed. Mikeschmidt, when you submited the Mike Schmidt basic set didn't you submit it with the Tiffany and Glossy cards, but they were taken out when Joe Orlando reviewed it. I think I remember you making a post about it. I think the Tiffany and Glossy cards should be included in the basic sets, but I think PSA should set a standard for this and I wouldn't be too upset if they were kept out of the basic sets.

    Alfiewt:

When the Mike Schmidt player registry transformed into the Basic and Master Set Registries, I believe that the "rules" had already been set in place with the Mickey Mantle Registry, so I can't help you there. However, my thought is this: I would rather see the Leaders cards in the Basic set Registry than any Tiffany cards. I think the Leaders/Record Breakers/Misc. other Special cards at least present something different than the basic set issue. The Tiffany cards are basically just the same thing, just shinier with more gloss. Same goes for the O-Pee-Chee issues, but for the French words on the card reverse. In my mind, the problem with the Tiffany/Glossy issues start to come to fruition in 1988 when Score, Fleer and Topps all had the Tiffany issues. Heck -- for me it is difficult to tell the difference between a regular issue and a Glossy 1987 Fleer card.

I had this EXACT problem with several cards in a row
that I completely deleted and confirmed gone.
and had to get Gayle to fix...

I finnally got frustrated and COMPLETELY DELETED
Every single one of the cards in my 7 registered sets!

I may add them again later, and then again I may not.
I have yet to see the big benefit to it.
