COUNTERFEIT DETECTION

I took a risk buying a raw 1920 St. Gaudens on ebay. The coin looked crisp so what the heck. Upon receipt the coin looked kinda funky. I submitted it to NGC for backup. Of course the seller refuses to to respond, but hey, at least I have another coin for my counterfiet collection.:1920 Fake

Does "not genuine" absolutely mean not gold (in this case) or could it mean gold but not a US coin, or improper content, etc?

I guess I'm asking if a counterfeit = altered date = not genuine or does each category get its own specific anotation?

Yes, please post the auctioneer and a link if pssible, so we can all learn from the experience. Frankly, I have stopped buying coins on ebay altogether. I prefer to buy from a reputable dealer!

Almost all the time the fakes are gold but counterfeit. Unless they are contemporary counterfeits. Then they are likely gold plated.

I did not post the seller of ebay lot because I was not aware of the "slander" policies. I suppose if all you seasoned vets think its ok then what the heck.

Because that is a contemporary counterfeit intended to pass in circulation. At the time it was made fifty cents probably represented a significant portion of a days pay. Especially if it was made during the 30's where it might have meant close to a weeks groceries for a person.

I would contact the seller and tell him you demand the refund.. And if he does not reply to your demands, Post a neg!
