Anyone have buying experience with Early American Auctions??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,413 ✭✭✭✭✭
Previewed a interesting pattern from these folks last week. I was hesitant to bid with a company that I don't know very well (some auction houses I would NEVER leave an absentee bid). Have you had any dealings with them, pos. or neg.??

Typo edit.

Lakes: I believe Rick Kay recently informed me that he just won a raw pattern coin or two for me out of their sale, subject to my approval. Perhaps Rick can comment on this. image Wondercoin.

I can't comment upon any other transactions other people have had, but I bought three patterns out of this latest auction, and saw them in person beforehand. They are all very rare, and I am happy with the coins.
  • Without any doubt whatsover, Early American is the worst, most offensive over-grader of raw coins I have ever seen.

  • Singapore is right. They have a long reputation for substantially overgrading coins. They have nice stuff frequently, but don't buy unless you have seen the item first.

I asked about them a while back. The responses were a landslide in favor of NOT doing any business with them.

Have not bought any raw coins from them, which seems to be where many have a problem with them. I have on two occasions bought slabbed materials from them. Nothing major. A couple of items, each under $500. I had no problems either with their post auction service or with the coins once I received them. I have no idea whether they engage in 'funny stuff' relative to running your bid up. I don't remember whether the items I purchased came in below my max bid or not.

  • I have won several national bank notes from them. Their service was fast, and the notes graded correctly. I may of overpaid for the notes, I don't know if they play fast and loose with my bids or not. Yes, I know this is dark side stuff...
I have been ripped badly by Stacks and lately by Superior!! I purchased a raw MS65PL Columbian, from Superior. Boy did they see me comming, I sent the coin to NCG came back MS63, no PL. OUCH!image

That hurts, Banknote. Sorry to hear the bad experiences.

banknote1, Superior is owned by TAGZ. If you don't know about them, do a little search on these forums.

Regardless of how they grade coins, they are a company to be avoided just because of their customer disservice policies.

Thanks for the tips - just like elsewhere, best to buy sight-seen.

Guess I should have done a thread search before posting - thanks for the reminder.
