1982-P Washington with Awesome Toning

image

This coin is part of a collection of Washingtons that I purchased stored in a standard dansco deluxe album. For some reason a lot of the clad coins developed toning, and a number developed beautiful rainbow toning similar to this coin.

Here's another one. Kind of interesting how it exhibits the same toning pattern at an earlier stage.
  • Those are Gorgeous. I have kicked myself in the butt for years cause I passed on a full set of silver washingtons, beautifully toned in an album. It was about 1997, and they were about 300.00 bucks. I was trying to control my spending. I've learned my lesson!

They are pretty, but I have never seen clad tone like that. Makes me suspicious.

nwcs- DON'T be suspicious! CLAD will tone like this if left alone, undisturbed, for many, many years, as DrewU pointed out. Beautiful quarters! That intense blue is captured well on your first image.

  • Looks like it was brushed on. Are those vertical brush strokes?

Nope, that's evidence of a weak strike. The planchet was probably not the world's best quality and may have gotten scratched in the rollers.

If these are indeed naturally toned, they are incredible!

    those for sale?

    pm me if they are
  • You would buy a poorly struck coin just because it had great or oustanding toning...I don't get it!
  • yes!

I don't even like Washingtons, don't own even one. Now that color is nice.
  • Those planchet striations do not necessarily indicate a weak strike, and in fact that coin looks well-struck. They are common in other certain coins/dates too, 1972-D Ikes for example.

Beautiful coins, and classic Dansco Clad toning. Would love to buy some Ikes that look like them. image
  • What did the 1983's look like??
