Has anyone tried this on regrades?

Let me first say that I am not a big submitter of coins; raw, crossover or regrade, but
I read about how everyone else is faring very poorly these days.

From what I understand, PCGS says that regrades are broken out of the holder before
being sent to the graders, yet most people seem to have miserable luck getting upgrades
unless the coins are cracked out and sent in raw.

And, from the sound of it, cracking toned coins out of the PCGS holder and sending them
in too often results in bodybags for AT or questionable color.

My question is, has anyone ever tried submitting PCGS coins for regrade, still in the
holder, but obliterating the insert grade and serial numbers first, perhaps by using a
drill or some other tool?

It seems that this should at least guarantee that the coin will not be bodybagged, right?

Of course, there would be no insert to turn in at a later date, but the pops are already
screwed up to the point where that really shouldn't matter.

Any thoughts?

    cool idea......

better yet......take the old band saw out and cut the PCGS label off and submit that way. When it comes back at a higher grade then cut out the tag and send it back.image

Of course when your MS66 comes back MS62, you can't prove to PCGS what the original grade was so you don't get any money from them for the downgrade.
  • Let me tell you how I have been doing it for over 10 years. You send the coin in , holder and all. Never a crack out. Never. When the coin
warrents a regrade, you will get it. I have seen many dealers send in coins for regrade that were lucky to be graded what they were.
Very few know what it takes for the grade. The biggest thing most miss is that the coin needs a lot of blast for a high grade. Mark free alone
won't get the top grades. And a few marks will not keep you out of the 66 range either. Original and lots of blast is what counts.
    Best of luck./

Another problem with separating the label from the coin (or defacing the label) is that PCGS may claim they can't match the coin and submitted label. In other words, from their standpoint, how are they going to know if a particular coin matches a particular label? Such questions may lead to voiding their guarantee. Since I've had this happen, I would avoid such tactics. It tends to raise more questions than it helps.

  • Of course doing something along these lines would void any downgrade guarantee,
just as cracking the coin out of it's holder does.

I was simply noting that some people feel they have a better chance at upgrading
if they crack the coin out, but then there is the risk of a bodybag (particularly for
    toned coins).

So, I was wondering if doing this would guarantee that there would be no bias
based on the coins previous grade (since it would be unknown), and at the same
time also guarantee that the coin wouldn't be bodybagged, since it was obviously
    in a PCGS holder before.

The risk of a downgrade would obviously lie solely with the submitter.
