Different standards for proof/SMS CAMs/DCAMs?

Mr. Hall:
SMS coins, of course, cannot be expected to display the same mirrors and contrast as proof coins. Therefore, is there a slightly less stringent standard for an SMS coin to receive a CAM/DCAM than a proof? That is, is an "adjustment" made -- relative to the degree of field contrast and cameo depth on devices that can be expected -- on SMS coins?

Randy

I believe the mirror issue is relative. PCGS would not expect SMS surfaces to be as deeply mirrored as a proof. But the CAM or DCAM designation has more to do with the depth of the frost. For CAM the frost has to be evident over the entire devices, both obverse and reverse. To be DCAM, the frost has to be thick and really white...David
