Toned ASE's coming back from PCGS this week

The 2001 is MS66, the 2002 is MS68. If the first one was anything but an ASE it would be definitely a candidate for AT - but guess the big boys know best!

  • how did they tone so quickly?

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    Well I like em. image

"The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD GOD Almighty."
  • I was just wondering what kind of environmental conditions they were exposed to, how they were stored, etc.... I wouldn't mind trying to instantiate massive toning live that just as a test.
  • Don't know Bsqr - I do know that since these are pure silver they are subject to more rapid toning, but you may just wind up with a bunch of black gems as well - It's a mystery I guess!

Frankly, I'm suprised and perhaps a little disappointed that PCGS is saying that the 'market has accepted' this extent of toning for a 1 & 2 year old coin...

These things are pure silver. They will tone EXTREMELY fast. Finding gold toned ones that have only been "exposed" for a few weeks is common.
  • thanks. maybe I'll buy a roll and do some sperimentin

Just for fun I bought 100 of the silver eagle boxes, put silver eagles in them and placed them in different places in my house. Put some in the attic, under the bed, under the kitchen sink etc. etc. I even put some in my garage where the kitty litter is. I figure in a year if I remember where they all are it'll be interesting to see what happens. If I don't like the way they tone I'll just dip them and sell them to the local bullion guy.

I don't know if anyone has ever seen how nice 1971 Canadian Dollars tone. I always wondered what would happen if you put other coins in those boxes. How much of it is the box and how much of it is the way the coin was made. Has anyone ever tried? Hmmmmmmmm, I'll have to try that one next if I ever get around to it.

I have a smartass comment image

WHy did YOU get the rightful grades? Mine got a nasty 63, then NGC bagged it for no good reason image It now resides in a flip with me, it's sister, and 2 other gorgeously toned eagles... wait for my digicam to get pictures of the rest...

Jeremy... BTW... I'd say 67 for this one, as would StuJoe's grading poll, as would most people who have seen it in person image

Frank, nothing against your coins, but even though they are pure silver and they tone fast I just don't buy it.

Just my opinion that means nothing. They may tone fast but they sure are coming out of the woodwork toning fast. It's funny, I have quite a few from years ago that don't have this..... but that's right I didn't put them somewhere to do it like some of these I see.image

Those coins are pure fake'n'bake and this proves even more so than the random bodybagging that PCGS doesn't know what they're talking about, providing of course that Frank is telling the truth and PCGS did actually give them the green light. I would love to see them inside a PCGS holder, then sold to Heritage or some other prominant auctioneer where the world will get to see them.

P.S. in both images it's apparant that the side of the coin shown on the right is the one that was laying on the cookie sheet or whatever when the coin was placed in the oven.

  • Until last year I had never seen a toned SAE, now they seem to be in slabs everywhere.

Did I just miss them before, or is this truly a new development?

    Got Morgan?

Remember, PURE silver reacts very rapidly with its environment and differently from coin silver. That is the reason for their fast reaction and hues. What it's made me think of, though, is the toning issue as it relates to silver eagles. Because they are so rapidly toned through air transfer the premium for toned ones will probably be lower than for other coin series like Morgans. Mainly because anyone can get these coins to tone and we'll probably have more naturally toned gem SAEs in the future because of it. And they are individually cheap when new so there is no effective barrier to entry for those who want to tone them up over a year or two.

I got a 1st strick ASE last year 02 it came in Feb. so I put it in a south side window to get a like sun. it did tan a beautiful gold color. I'll leave it there another year to see what happens to it. I also left a 2000 pr Kennedy right next to it the half hasn't toned at all.
