A coin I want, but refuse to buy..

I think the reason I refuse to buy it is obvious, but I'd really like to have this one at this price:

ACG 1864 2 Center

I know, I could buy it and crack it out, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I'd buy from Saddam before I'd buy an ACG slab image

Buy the coin and not the holder. If you focus on the holder, you'll miss out on some nice coins.

  • I agree. It looks like a nice specimen.
Life got you down? Listen to John Coltrane.
  • If it was any other holder, I would. I don't want to support ACG, or any dealer who supports them, in any way. I can't stand that company! And the sooner their gone, the better. I could never look at that coin without thinking "it was in a stinking ACG holder!" It might as well be radioactive for all I care! Its like when Seinfeld dumped his girlfriend's toothbrush in the toilet, then dumped her because he knew where the toothbrush had been (even though she didn't). I just would never be able to get that image out of my head!

  • Buy the coin not the holder!!!! Even if it is just an AU it's still worth alot more than what it's at right now. Its not comming from AH-collectables so it's ok. Just tell yourself that it's in a fancy 2x2. (you could always have someone else buy it, then sell it to you raw)

In this case, buying the coin and not the holder would net you a cleaned, recolored POS hat would be body-bagged by any real grading service.

    David,
Good for you for sticking to your guns. NOT supporting any activity that is directly involved in ACG coins is a good thing.

There will be other coins that'll come along and you'll be richly rewarded for following your principles here.

  • Russ, I'm curious what leads you to conclude (so easily) that the coin has been cleaned. Surely you can't see hairlines in those photos?
  • i'm no copper expert, but see how splotchy the brown looks? that would be a giveaway for re coloring (and of course, there's no reason to recolor if it hadn't been cleaned to a brassy orange. ) take this wth a grain of salt, but let's find a copper or cent guy or gal somewhere. . . .. . . . . . .

  • I figure an ACG slab is as good as a cardboard holder. So I bid on it.image

    geb209,

See Bluecole's post. It draws the same conclusion I did. Just one of the many purchasing mistakes, (and thus learned the hard way), I've made. Fortunately, the tuition on these is less expensive than others.

  • Those ebay pics don't let you see what the coin really looks like IMO. I just don't like AGC. I even avoid dealers at shows that have ACG coins in their cases!!!

Looking for Nationals, Large VF to AU type, 1928 Gold, and WWII Emergency notes. Also a few nice Buffalo Nickels and Morgan Dollars.

The coin looks dipped and recolored. I am certain enough of that not to bid on it. 40 years plus of studying copper and buying enough mistakes leads me to that conclusion.
  • Russ, thanks for the info. I don't buy copper coins but its good to know anyway.

there is a reason the coin is only selling for xf money.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

Bravo, dwood. I would do the same, even if the coin were PQ and undergraded (I know - an impossibility). That sc*mbag dealer sells mostly ACG. For me , that is reason enough for me not to buy the coin or the holder.

Buy the coin, Your not supporting ACG, by getting the coin. It is floating like a true auction, the plastic is irrelevant! ACG sucks when sellers retail them based on the grade given by ACG. If the coin is sold in the slab, but sells for what bidders will pay, based on a nice scan then your buying a coin that you can enjoy and crack out of the ACG slab. Besides, you have paid the market price and no more.

    Just my thoughts,
    Tyler
  • That coin is a piece of garbage both in and out of that ACG holder. Cleaned, recolored and worthless. Irish Mike knows his copper. You can find better.
