Toning on Uncirculated versus circulated and lightly circulated coins

This weekend while looking over some dollars, I was give a few that definitely looked circulated, but had what I definitely determined to be artificial "rainbow" toning on them. This got me to thinking that most of the uncirculated toned coins that I've seen (the genuine ones) definitely have a "look" about them that is not the same as in lightly circulated coins. In the discussions that we've had on this subject I don't recall touching on this subject and was wondering what observations you folks might have on this subject.

Thanks!

  • I picked up a circ Morgan this weekend...probably a mid grade AU...that had a real "muddy" looking crescent on it...but when I pulled it down and rotated it in the light, it had some really pretty colors in the "mud" By the pattern and flow of colors in the tone, I think it's real. I have a couple other circ Morgans with the classic "album toning" appearance.

Toning evaluation I think is always gonna be a really controversial topic. I like it on Morgans, but I don't throw a lot of money at it. That's why I don't feel too bad if 1 or 2 of them are AT.

i have quite a few circ'd coins w/ fantastic album colors. my lowest grade is a VG drape-bust quarter w/ full rainbow bloom on the obv (but the rev. is grey). this is when i wish i had a danged camera!

personal opinion: AU bust halves w/ W-R toning are the best.
