OK, How do dealers get there coins?

OK, where do they get there coins?

I've tried auctions, placed an add in the local paper, called a few elderly aunts and uncles etc....

Other dealers... estates... they buy many thousands of dollars at a time, which is how they get good deals... for example, my local dealer buys estates with values of $50k-$100k+, so he has plenty of room to make a profit... remember, even a few percent is real money... get lucky with a holder, and you've made much more!

  • they steal coins which have been in albums for fifty years from widows and idiot nephews who think they are "tarnished" and sell them on ebay as Monsters.

Here in Salt Lake there is a small warehouse filled with boxes of choice original coins. The dealer merely pops in and gets the coins he needs for his inventory at a fair wholesale price.

I found the warehouse, approached the guard at the door and nicely asked if I could enter to look for Barber halves. He bi***ed slapped me with a backhand and dropped me with a knee to my tender groin area.

needless to say I haven't been back, and am very jealous of the dealers who are allowed to shop there! image

The eighth wonder of the world is how a dealer keeps a large, stacked inventory!

  • ARCO,

The next time you make a trip to this warehouse, let me know in advance. While your distracting him at the front door I'll sneak in thru the back door and grab all the 79 and 89 CC Morgans. Don't worry I'll cash out some of the 89's to pay your medical billsimage

I have been involved in the used car business for over twenty years and thier is a huge behind the scenes dealer only wholesale market with the general public having little or no knowledge of it and I have always thought the coin business had the same type of dealer only wholesale market but on a much smaller scale. mike image

Since I don't have a store I buy all my coins from other dealers. Since I usually like to look at my coins before buying them I do very little buying on ebay. I usually have to go to coin shows or coin shops to buy coins. The most important thing is the relationships I've built with other dealers over the years. I've had to pay my dues. The people I deal with know me and hopefully like selling to me. It also saves me a lot of time with people that are a waste of time.
