This was different from the USPS

I sent out a package a month and a half ago, or so. The buyer provided me the wrong zip code, and notified me after the package was sent. I waited 30 days, and filed a claim with the post office as they buyer didn't receive the package (I wonder why!). The claims dept. for the post office issued me a refund, and I, in turn, issued the buyer a refund. No biggie so far, as I figure if the buyer can't provide the proper zip code, they pretty much deserve all this, but they do end up with their money back, eventually.
Low and behold in my mailbox today........the missing package! Returned to me as undeliverable. Now what? Do I have a "free" coin? image

*Oh yes, this was a blue ticketed ($100+) insured package.

It's the USPS' coin now image

Exactly. You are supposed to relinquish the coin or reimbursement to the USPS -- it is probably not worth it to do otherwise.

Describe said coin. Maybe one of us is willing to relieve you of the burden image then you could simply repay Uncle Sam without coming out of your pocket.

Return the $ and keep the coin, or in the alternative, bring it to USPS' attention for them to handle the decision.
  • Return the money, and keep the coin...

Consider it a bonus for all your troubles. But if you can't live with yourself, deduct your troubles and return the rest. lol Actually the PO loses billions in regards to this matter but there may be more headaches returning the money then if you had kept it. There may also be a time frame for such
matters where you may end up keeping it anyway. You would think the PO should be fully aware of delivering a package that had a claim on it. I've often wondered what I would do if a couple of lost packages eventually show up here that I have already received claims money for. Somewhat of a tough call but a test of your morales.

  • Have the post office wait 30 days, then stand in line to fill out the proper forms, and tell them they'll have a check in another 30 days, subject to verification of additional documentation as necessary. Then reject it because they forgot to date their signature.

Do as Supercoin suggests. But after you reject their claim, advise them of their right to appeal. With the proper paperwork of course!

Right. Return it to its rightful owner- the Post Office paid for it, they own it.

Sometimes it is easier to not apply the principles of right and wrong when it is a large entity vs a single person.
I would be frightened not so much with you getting away with it, but what this does to you personally, should you get away with it.

It seems to me the PO should come up with a tracking system, especially for green, blue & red labels. UPS & Fedex can do it.

The USPS can't even track their delivery confirmation...

It's not lke the USPS has a discount transit service, depending on weight/distance the USPS can be substantially more than the competition.

I remember getting a package from you and it took 21 days with the correct zip code.

In either event, I think neither stupidity or incompetence should be rewarded.

It's up to you what you should do.

(note: you could always flip a coin and let fate decide relieving you of any decision-making burdens.)

Are you willing to take the chance that some pencil pusher in the Post Office won't notice that you got the package back? If you're not worried about this and your conscience won't allow you to keep the coin, then donate the coin to the charity auction on the B/S/T board.

  • I had a coin lost and the USPS paid for it. Then it turned up in my box. I tried to return the coin but the postal clerk said for me to keep it!! So I did!!!

Some very interesting replies. Well, I was at the post office today, sending off some packages, and mentioned what had happened. I did not have the coin with me, but asked opinions of what I should do.........with a giggle, I was told to keep the coin, by all three clerks out front. If the coin was worth more money, I'd probably persue this further, but it's $90. I have a good relationship with the postmaster, I'll mention it to her, and see what she says. I don't think she'll chuckle, but I bet she tells me to keep the coin too. I'll let everyone know how this turns out. I'll be back at the post office later in the week.

  • doesn't it strike anyone as strange that the usps was unable to deliver a package for a faulty zip code?

It wouldn't strike me as strange if the USPS couldn't deliver a package with a completely correct address.

I FREQUENTLY get mail for my neighbors and occasionally for people who live nowhere near me. I once got a letter from someone in NY addressed to another person in NY. I live in CA. image

Last week I got a letter addressed to Russia! It was from someone in Iowa! (two states away)

Handed it to the postman and told him he missed.
