Yeah, I was kinda shocked @ that price too. I figured $200-$225, which is still high, but it was a Binion and a * so it was going high. I just didn't think it go as high as it did.
Oh, well, unlike Russ and his AHs, I guess I can't own all the toned Peace $ in the world.
Baseball - toned Peace dollars do bring a premium, but it's not that hard to spot the AT jobs on Ebay. Most/all the slabbed toned examples I've seen are natural and are for the most part not something anyone would buy unless they really wanted one. They just aren't that nice, or should I say as nice as a monster toned Morgan. If you want pretty colors, rainbows, textiles, ect stay with the Morgans. I don't think there's a big enough market to warrant cooking Peaces and the grading companies are, I think, alot tighter with toned Peaces since they are rare. IMO

Frattlaw, I guess you forgot about this one. I guess they weren't tight on this Peace$.

With the price that ended on that Binion, maybe I should accept offers on mine above. Hey, besides the Binion Peace $ with a star ( which they were very free with the star, on ones I've seen ) mine is a pop1 last I checked.

I have seen a lot of toned Binion dollars. I wonder if the desert heat might have played a part in toning these coins. The only thing I don't understand is why they sell for unearthly sums??

There are alot of toned Peace dollars in old NGC holders and a growing amount in new NGC holders because of several facts.
1) Old NGC holders have caused some peace dollars to tone but rarely dramatically. Interaction between the paper label & ink and the coin. Also may explain why you see the monsters in PCGS holders as opposed to NGC holders
2) Toned Peaces in new NGC holders are there because of people have now been reholdering those earlier slabbed Peaces to prevent further toning.
3) Growing market for these coins, more are getting slabbed as the demand and prices rise. I just talk to a Long Beach dealer that had a monster toned 22-D slabbed, it had been sitting around in his safe for 20 years.
I doubt that NGC is letting in a wave of doctored toned Peace dollars. My set is in NGC holders and I'll tell you, they are getting strict on grading these coins. 3 PCGS coins were downgraded 1 pt on a cross-over. I suspect because PCGS overgraded them due to color and now NGC has given them a justified technical grade.
Stman -- What do you want for it? That definately looks AT to me!
If you really want a coin can you pay too much? I find it disrespectful to criticize someone for a purchase, even if it's above "price guides". I've done it, and I know a lot of other forum members have as well. I like the coin, and I'm sure the new owner will too. Just think about it will ya..
Frattlaw, the Peace$ I posted is the same one I posted before. It was graded recently. If you want it PM me with an offer, but you need to know it isn't goin cheap and I don't think you would pay the price. If this coin was real, it would be one of the best ones around.
But I am telling you in public that IMO it's not real. Since you're an attorney did I word that right as not to get sued by anybody? Like I really care.

Frattlaw, I thought about me mentioning to make an offer on the NGC ms63* Peace$ I own. IMO it's blatent AT and I'm not going to sell it to a collector feeling this way, I have too much class for this ( I know that might be hard to believe ) IMO, I think it is a perfect example of the new slang word for AT it's called "Market Acceptable."
I don't buy and sell coins and rarely do Ebay and such. Of coarse if you twist my arm and really want it knowing how I feel about the coin than I guess we could do it as a "Done Deal"
