"According to a statement released from The United States Mint Pressroom 'evidence of tarnishing and spotting has exceeded acceptable quality standards. As a consequence of this evaluation, sales of the sets have been discontinued. All remaining 1999-2001 Proof sets will be destroyed.'"
That article is from July 12th, 2002.... but... I have read different stories about where these coins came from. The first I heard was from a Press Release issued from the Mint in which it stated that these sets came from unsold inventory. Yet another Press Release issued by the mint stated in March 2000 that the sets were almost sold out. In fact I tried to purchase more sets but.. in fact, they sold out of the 1999. Same happened in 2000, tried to purchase additional sets but they were sold out.
I actually contacted Michael White via email at the time, he had no comment other than to call him. Not sure why he couldn't have let me know via email.
Afterward, the official word came from the mint that they had minted additional sets with the intention of selling them at a later time. and I don't remember the exact price they had but it was more than the original price if you purchased the 3 sets seperately.
I know I raised a stink about it, I understand that other people made a stink about it... I guess it was just a coincidence that the quality of these coins "deteriorated" but strangely enough, coins that were issues in 1999 did not suffer the same deteriorating quality?
