Collectors Universe, Inc. Names New Executive Line Up For Its Professional Coin Grading Service Division

- February 10, 2003
Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), the world’s largest independent third-party rare coin authentication service and a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (Nasdaq: CLCT), announced today that company founder, David Hall, will assume the responsibilities of President of PCGS. It was also announced that Mike Sherman will assume the responsibilities of Senior Vice-President of PCGS and Miles Standish will assume the responsibilities of Senior Vice President of Business Development.

Hall also will maintain his position as President, Collectors Universe. Sherman will also continue overseeing the operations of the PCGS’ stamp grading sister company, Professional Stamp Experts (PSE). Standish will also continue as a senior grader with PCGS.

In making the appointments, Collectors Universe CEO, Michael Haynes, stated, "Having David Hall as president of PCGS gives us the luxury of having the foremost expert on third-party coin grading as our business leader. In addition, having excellent senior leadership in two experienced numismatists and businessmen such as Mike Sherman and Miles Standish only further enhances the future for PCGS and its tens of thousands of customers who have trusted the services of PCGS."

Hall was one of the founders of PCGS in 1986 and served as it's CEO until 1999, when Collectors Universe went public. He is considered one of the market's top rare coin grading experts and credited with many of PCGS' innovations, the latest being the influential PCGS Set Registry that is a significant factor in today’s numismatic marketplace resurgence. Mike Sherman was formerly a senior manager with Heritage Rare Coin Galleries from 1979 to 1998 and Vice-President of Jefferson Coin & Bullion from 1998 to 1999. Sherman joined Collectors Universe in 1999.

Hall stated, "While I have been somewhat involved with PCGS during the past four years, I am very excited that my new role will now allow me to devote much more of my time to PCGS. I look forward to working with our new Senior Vice-President, Mike Sherman, our Senior Vice-President of Business Development, Miles Standish, our Director of Grading, Ron Howard, and all the other great members of the PCGS team. All of us will continue the PCGS tradition of both providing the best possible third-party grading services and bringing market enhancing innovations to numismatics."

I wish David and all of the officers good fortune in solving the problems

that seem to be holding the company back.Improvement in turn around time

would certainly benefit us collectors. Each day we wait seems like a week.

The best most of us can hope for in life is to 'have a shot' at being in a position to make a difference.

Well, these guys just got their shot. I wish them the best.

  • So, Who is the "BIG DOG" in this pack, or if you wish, "THE ALPHA MALE" ? I would assume that DH would be, but maybe not? Opinions?

  • I think the intent is to significantly improve profitability. I don't see that involving a shorter turnaround time for economy and modern grading. Higher fees per coin and greater bulk submissions will drive profits. Back when Rick left, I said that it appeared they would rather take 1 call for a 2,000 bulk submission than 400 calls for 5 coin submissions. My viewpoint has not changed. By playing against a collector's impatience, they will attempt to drive them to the pricier, shorter timeframe submission. We will see if they are successful in this new endeavor.

I honestly mean no offense, but wouldn't you rather take 1 call for 2000 submissions than 400 calls for 5 submissions each? That's not only good business, that's common sense, isn't it? The biggest bulls are always going to have the best positions at the trough. That doesn't necessarily mean that the calves have to starve to death. 60 day turnaround, 90 day turnaround, 6 month turnaround...none of that matters to me. Then again, I'm a collector and not a dealer. However, were I a dealer, I would likely assume that if I'm sending in 4000 coins each year, I will probably (and I damn well better) get faster service than "Average Joe."

In a perfect world, we'd get 15 day service, EVERY time, no matter who we are.

I'd also be forever 24, with a flat stomach, full head of hair, and more cash than Bill Gates at a gentleman's club image
