Change of pace: the most Disturbing Kennedies on the Planet.

Over the course of the last twenty years, while gathering beautiful Kennedies, I've also come across the strange and whacky and disturbing Kennedies too.

Here's are a few of the Cybil Kennedies:
Copper Planchet This coin weights more than it's silver counterpart and ANACS verbal gives it the nod, based on striking characteristics, on being a possible copper planchet. It's on the way to them for further testing.

NOT a Die Set Up coin image I thought this was a Die Trial Set-up coin, but it's not. Just a filled die. (PCGS confirmed that on a crossover attempt.) Interesting though.

1970-D "SMS" This coin was found in a Kennedy set, in the spot where the 1965 SMS was supposed to be. I can understand the confusion. It has pure SMS (really, even PROOF) characteristics I've not seen so strongly on a 1970-D before or since. Cameo too.

  • This is disturbing in another sense:

I have a Kennedy that somebody put up on a tree or firing range. They shot a bullet at it, perhaps two bullets, probably from a rifle. The damage to the coin is in the back of JFK's head.

    enough said.

I would prefer not to post a scan.

Got it from a shop clerk, as I recall -- I often ask for 'em at supermarkets and filling stations.

Life got you down? Listen to John Coltrane.
  • Cool, so what's the theory on the '64 copper planchet? Some foreign coin struck by the US mint during that time?

The 70-D is obviously a new die. I've not seen one quite like it.

Prooflike 1970-D are somewhat common. However, yours seems to be more prooflike than normal.

Did ANACS look at the "copper" Kennedy out of the slab? I would guess plated or counterfeit.

-Supercoin: Jim Barlow looked at the copper Kennedy and noted, correctly, that the strike was deep and extremely detailed as it would be. Copper being softer than a 90% silver planchet would provide a more detailed striking using the same pressure.

He was of the opinion it was struck on a foreign planchet although one that is the exact size of the half did not come to mind.

-Cladking: I agree with your opinion of the die life forthe 1970-D. I wish you could see it in person because, compared to a PCGS MS67CAM 1967 Kennedy I have, other than the date (and MM) you wouldn't be able to spot the difference- other than the 70-D has a couple of extra tics- (the photo doesn't reflect how deep the mirrors are).

  • I have an NGC 1970-D MS66 that has fully prooflike mirrors as yours does braddick, and a nice cameo contrast too.
