unethical???

Is it unethical to place non-proof coins in a hard plastic US Proof holder? My Dad's birth year is 1930, and no proof sets were made back then. I bought him a nice MS65 Lincoln, to start with, and thought it would be a nice display and storage unit to buy. The local dealer has them for about $5, and they are the ones you screw together. But the dealer also said that I am putting non-proof coins into a US Proof holder, and may not want to do it. I suppose ther could be problems later, such as if it were sold. I just thought it looked nice, and was a better way to store the four 1930 coins that I am planning on getting him. Any thoguhts?

As long as you do not try to sell them as proof, it is up to you. SMS whitman holders work well. Capitol holders are nice as well.

I have seen some people try to sell circulated year sets and call them proof - that is unethical (or at least uninformed)

Assuming the holder does not say "Proof" on it, I don't see a problem. The Mint didn't issue proof coins in holders in 1930 anyway.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

One can put a coin or coins in whatever holder one wants with some obvious exceptions.

Put a 'P' dime dated 1916 with another Mercury dime that has a 'D' on its reverse in a 2x2 Capital plastics "1916-D" holder if you want to and it makes you feel good. There is no law against it.However,if the same one were to represent to another for the purpose of sale the two Mercury dimes in the holder as one genuine 1916-D,one goes from just being kind of silly to being a con.

Only unethical if you sell it as such, in which case it's not just unethical, but fraud as well.

  • Jeremy is absolutely right. It's only unethical if you try to sell/ trade or otherwise try to present it as a Proof. Twowood

You worry too much; I hope your father likes it.
