I believe the only instance of type 1 and 2 proofs would be 1956. There is a small difference in the Eagle's right wing; the same eagle used on the circulation strike is used on proofs up thru '56, then a new Eagle was used on proofs thereafter.

For an example see any pre '56 proof and compare with any '57 or later. There are multiple instances of type 1 and 2 reverses on the circulation strikes.

    Thank you Gilbert
  • Here is a link to a thread from back in June on the subject. Scroll down to the post by FC57Coins. He has provided two additional links that show photos of the two types. Hope this helps. image

The Type one proof was used from dies in use from 1950 to 1955. The Reverse Eagle and Liberty Bell will all look the same. In mid 55 the Dies were reworked resulting in a eagle with sharper detail..........

here is a type 1 Eagle. Notice the lack of detail in the breast and feathers...

Now here is a type 2 found on most 55's all the way to 1963.

Notice the sharp detail in the Eagles breast and feathers and wings....

Ooopss.... right, I had images of your 55 in my head..... I did mean 50-56 for the type 1 reverse and most 56's thru 63 for type 2 reverse... Se what your proof 55 Frankie did to me!!!!!!!

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying that they look like type 1's and not type 2's? The scans as I see them look okay to me. image

As a Morgan dollar enthusiast, and particularly the 1878 "tailfeather" varieties, I tend to differentiate the two reverse eagles by the number of feathers visible on the eagle's right wing; type 1 has five and type 2 has four (see images above).
