Here's the reason I do not like NGC

I have nothing against NE Numismatics but they have an unfortunatle "honor" of having this coin in their inventory. Maybe Rick should have a little chat with the greaders image

Planchet flaws???

@ PCGS this coin would end up in a BB in a blikk of an eye

I hate NGC slab design anyway image

  • I believe PCGS would slab it, but the holder might well say "Mint Error..Planchet flaw," I've seen that on strike thru coins before in PCGS holders. Heck,PCGS did that for a 1839 MS64 "Booby Head" Large Cent I sent in with a larger strike thru on reverse.

The coin is 273 years old. The grading services will allow a lot on olcer coins that they wouldn't allow on newer coins.

Were this a Ike dollar, it would get bagged. A Morgan dollar - a bag. A Bust dollar - probably slabbed. The older the coin, the more problems allowed.

I just got a 39S Washington bagged by NCS, nothing wrong with the coin other than they felt it do more harm to the luster than good. The reverse was turning dark. They refused to cross it at NGC becuase of a planchet flaw. So I guess the age of the coin has something to do with it. Anyway I ran it past a former grader from NGC at FUN who pointed out the planchet flaw and thought the coin was ideal candidate for conservation. By the way the exgrader is a member here, he can vouch for the coin.

So sadysta 1, should I hate the company that had slabbed it, planchet flaw and all?

Planchet flaws were common on coins minted with primitive methods and not reason for NG. Any company would slab that coin so you need to quit liking all slabs. image

    mike,

Unless I have an identical twin, I must presume I am that " former grader from NGC at FUN who pointed out the planchet flaw and thought the coin was ideal candidate for conservation. By the way the exgrader is a member here, he can vouch for the coin." image

I am a bit confused and have a question - you say the coin was "bagged" by NCS and NGC refused to cross it - did you crack the coin out, or are you just saying that NCS would not conserve it, upon examining it in the holder ?

Yep they looked at it and quote, coin would be harmed if conserved. I called them and they wouldn't crack and cross it because of the planchet flaw. Guess I am learning something new every day.
  • Anyone who would body-bag such a coin should be smacked! That coin is beautiful, and well worthy of respect.
