Why is this Bust half so high?

I collect Bust halves esp. in AU. I put a watch on this auction for a 1826 AU 55 half. I just checked on it and it is really high.

It is a nice half, but it is not a $400 half. I usually see them go for $200 in this grade. Am I missing something here?

Somone thinks they can get it into a 63/64 holder. I paid nearly $500 for an AU a few weeks ago because it looked MS (though I don't crack mine out).

I do not have an Overton catalog with me, but my guess is that it is a scarcer variety and more than one serious collector has seen it.

Agree with Kyle. The difference between AU55-58 and MS62-3 is very slight in many cases in the Bust 50C series. I too have paid too much for slabbed AU58's that I thought were better.

If you check recent auction records and many dealer FPL's, these coins have been in NGC and PCGS slabbed AU55 grades have been bringing over MS60 money. BTW, this applies only to those with nice eye appeal. I can't say that I'd pay that much for that specific coin, but there is ample market evidence.

it appears to be an overton -109 . this variety in an R-1 ,and it doesen't look to be unc.

so I have know idea why there chasing this coin. ?
