For the Bust People

I'm thinking of buying a bust coin, my first love but never got any very nice ones. If you had $250 to spend on a bust coin what would you buy? What grade? What date? (I just want to see what $250 would buy)

  • this was a little more than you wanted to spend but if I had to dabble into Bust halves then this would be it

  • image Wow pretty! Can you tell me what grade it was and how much $?

I would suggest a 1836 Lettered edge coin, as it was still made without the steam press, and an AU coin should cost a little less than you want to spend.

For $250, you should be able to get a very nice common date Capped Bust half in EF45. Or, save up and buy a better date one or a common date in ChAU (~ $400).

Make sure you go by luster and eye appeal!!! This is another series where you can be separated from your money awfully quickly if you don't heed my advice!

I think bust dimes in XF-AU are great and have a few myself. I plan to add more.

Quarters are more expensive than halves, which were not used as heavily as the smaller denominations. Many were stored away in banks, similar to today's halves. They are clearly the best value for you and you should be able to get an au coin, although some au's can cost much more.

  • If you haven't already, check out this site. It's all raw, but the material is great and the grading is accurate.

Vf30 for the 1826 half. There is just a tough too much wear to get an Ef40

I agree i must say that the blown up pic makes it looks much worst then what it looks like in person.
I was surprised by a grade of AU53 on the last one i submitted. maybe this one will do well also.

  • Yes I am quite sure it is high 6, I think I may have over graded. Im so used to the little coins for this series (half dimes) the detail change is so great I cant grade halfs. But I will get to know halfs better if I decide to buy one. (I think I will go for drapped bust because I have always wanted one... or 2.)

The draped bust is a beautiful coin but can get costly. I have a few somewhere around here. I will have to dig them out and take a pic.

  • Hi! Here is what a $210 1830 half-dime can look like.

I don't believe it is. I think the "high 6" would be one with (according to Overton) Obverse-2 and of the designation O-102 or O-103 (depending on which reverse). While it would appear the six on yours is higher than the rest of the numerals, your coin does not have obverse 2. That is characterized by star 7 (counting starting from lower left and running clockwise) having a point pointing directly at the upper left corner of the Liberty headband, which yours does not.

Rather, I believe yours is variety O-112. Overton doesn't say anything about the height of the six being greater than that of other numerals, but it does seem that way by looking at his image.

I'd also think it would grade VF.

Part of the fun in collecting bust coinage, especially half dollars, is in the identification of the varietites.

Thanks for all the great info. It is the best part of learning about coins.
