I Like toned Binion Dollars

BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
Over the last two weeks I have won at auction or purchased a number of Binion Dollars

in NGC-65*, 66* and 67*. I know that these dollars are supposed to be overgraded by NGC,

but the tones are so vibrant its hard to resist. Seems to be a lot of interest on the auctions

for them. 66* with outstanding color seem to be going for around 1200 - 1500 dollars.

The 67* with superb coloring on both sides are going for 3500 - 4500 dollars. These are for

common dates. I guess that the collecting community is just rediscovering the beauty of toned Morgans.

Obviously, the above stated money is for top of the line coins that would probably cross over to

PCGS if one were to be disposed to do that. A number of superior 65* Binionswith outstanding colors

have been going at auctions on eBay for around 650 -750 for common dates. But again these prices

are for top of the line coins and color.

    Bear,

Why don't you post some scans of your new purchases? I've found that many of the Binion coins have a very distinctive 'look' to them....must have something to do with the conditions under which they were stored.

I am "toned Binion" challenged! But I like them too! Gsaguy is right, they do seem unique in their toning.

If you bought them on eBay you could post the auctions if there are pictures for us travel challenged.

Some of the Binion coins are spectacular and they're not ALL overgraded as I was led to initially believe, because I've seen more and more properly graded coins the past year. Sounds like you've got some of the cream of the crop. Congrats!

    That's hilarious Placid!

I agree, if you could post an eBay link or two of your purchases we could share with you some of these vibrant Binny's.

    Thanks,

The two most recent ones were on eBay by Waldwick and were the 1887 Binion NGC66*

and the 1886 Ngc 65*. I hope that will help. Other toned coins were by Mbcoin auction.

I won the fantastic 1884 rainbow in PCGS-ms63 and the 1979 NGC MS-66 both not

Binion pieces. I also purchase the Magnificent Binion Morgan 1886 MS67* and the lovely1886

monocromatic Tone in pure gold/bronze evenly spread accross the obverse from Wayne Herndon.

By the way he is a pleasure to deal with. Of cours our very own Anaconda sold me from his

eBay store (Anaconda Rare Coins) a wonderful toned 188ls in NG63* PL toned magnificently

    and a l996 PCGS -65 toned a bullet burgandy./gold

Stman - When you mentioned Mbcoins, I went to their website and saw the coin he had

listed in his auction. I paid the pay now price and that ended the auction on that coin.

Regards and thank you again Abe

PS. What do you thing of the two coins I got from Wayne which he was nice

enough to place on the thread?

Just a thought, but it would seem the Binion toned coins may merit a premium by virtue of the fact that they were clearly not artificially toned as so many others out there being described as "monsters" may well be.
  • BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
Northcoin - I believe you are correct. Binion was not a collector by any means. He just hoarded bags of

Morgans in a secret underground spot and then just left them alone. Over the many years ,the coins and

Mother Nature combined to produce many remarkably toned gems. To be sure there is a lot of low grade

coins and many are heavily marked up. But the special look of the best of them is truly awsome. If

one is selective on purchases, then you really cant get hurt. I am not sure how many other toned hoards

are out there. But this one seems have demand growing for the top condition and finest toning.

Relayer - The 1886 looks even better in person then its picture.I could never be a coin dealer,

as I could never sell the really top of the line coins. I dont know how Mike finds these gems, Just hard

workand attending a lot of shows I guess. You cant imagine the agony I felt just wating for the coins

to arrive. Every day felt like a week.

    Hello bear

I was reading an article somewhere on the net about the Binion hoard as i to own a few of the coins from this hoard, (but in blast white)
The article pointed to the fact that Binion also hoarded cases and cases of canned peaches in juice, several of the cases were found to have leaking cans in them and you guessed it leaking all over some of the bags of coins. Some of binions coins have an odor of peach to them. BUt now i am wonderring what effect the suger water from the peace juice had on the coins?

    Thanks
    Coz

  • BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
I suspect that a heavy soaking in peach juice would lead to a staining of the coin surface

which would be viewed by most collectors as undesirable and out of context with the

    normal toning effects.

  • Awesome coins Bear...and the Frankie is beauty too!

I wonder if the fact that the coins were stored underground, in the middle of the desert has something to do with the toning? I've heard the peach story before (thankfully, I don't collect peaches image ) but I wonder if something about an underground bunker in the niddle of the desert would produce (or attract) strange variances in humidity which could lead to unusual toning?

Whatever it is, there are some beautiful Binions. One day...but for now I'm still saving for the pissing astronaut image

I think that is true. Atmospheric conditions of contaminants and humidity play a far greater role in toning

then just the temperature. I suspect that the buried hiding place, provided a stable atmosphere and

temperature with low humidity. These conditions would allow the chemicals in the canvas sack to do

their work in a most unique and beautiful way. Another advantage, the coins were not subjected

to mechanical counting machines as were the Redfield Hoard of dollars. Many Redfield coins suffered

typical cuts and unsightly scrapes by such machines. I think that the stable dry conditions had a lot

to do with the Binion Hoards special look and quality of the toned coins contained therein.

  • MrKelso is confusing two different hoards. It was Redfield who hoarded the peaches not Binion.

Does anyone have a slab they don't need from the Binion Silver hoard? Or at least scans fo both sides? Now that is the Binion SILVER hoard not the Binion COLLECTION! NGC has used that same three cowboy label on three different groups of coins each of which was identified on the bottom bar of the label. The Binioncollection.com, The Binionsilverhoard, and the Nevadasilverhoard.com

I have a Binion collection piece and I have a scan of the front of a Nevada silver hoard. I have seen a Binion silver hoad but have no pictures. I still need specimens of the latter two yet for the reference set.

Very nice coins. When Teletrade came out with the first auction on them, I put up about 20 maximum bids, double what I would have normally bid for the coins. My max's were clobbered within an hour of the auction opening up.
  • Very nice coins, Bear.

Perhaps if you crack-out your new MS70 and store it in your new cookie jar along with a jelly doughnut, you can achieve even greater colors! image

    Again, AWESOME Dollars! image

I've noticed the Binion hoard is providing much better toned Morgans than the Redfield hoard. I can only guess it is (partically) due to the climate of Nevada and the dry, warm air whereas Redfield had his stash burried where it was a bit more moist.

  • I've got a Binion 87-P MS 63 with a nice patch of toning on the obverse upper right quadrant, but nothing as nice as yours, Bear....
  • Dear Mr. Bear:

My oh my - what a wonderful pair of ladies you have there! I do believe Mrs. Bear should be worried! - Excellent coins Abe - I love the luster that they appear to have beneath that great toning - now, if we can only get you to buy a camera and get Russ to give you some picture taking lessons!!! image

MNMCOIN- Nice coin, but the real value is toning on the obverse. While I generally tend towards

the higher grades like MS 65,66,67 with stars, I have bought MS-63 with amazing color. You can see

that coin by going to MBcoin@Yahoo.com. The first coin should be the 1884-O PCGS in MS-63.

Bear, I'm still at a loss which one from MBcoin you got. The first one he did have listed is not there and he has a pic of it but 2 other coins are listed instead. If that makes any sense, but I think I know which one you're talking about.
