I've seen a lot of nickels especially proofs with similar color schemes is PCGS and NGC holders. Approximately five years ago it seems like they just started showing up. I would guess they are "homemade" but the coins appear to be stable and I love the colors so why not?image
  • Looks real to me.

It looks like what Mark Feld/Coinguy1/Pinnacle Rarities Dude has had and shown us... for a 67 that is monster toned, I sure wish it was in a holder, just because... a larger picture would be nice... especially to add to the drool factor image

Looks real, and I agree with EXACTLY what Boiler78 mentioned.

So, "home-made" as in AT or enhanced? Think it would grade or get BB? Seems like with all the talk about BB's I would not waste the money to try it. Dont get me wrong. I love the coin.... I have one similiar in 65 in ANACS, it comes alive in sunlight.

Regardless of what caused the toning coins with this color scheme are routinely slabbed. I don't think it would be bagged as AT.

The problem is the price difference in that date between a 66 and 67, are enormous. If it was a 67, you can bet it would be slabbed already. There's too much money being left on the table by the seller if it is indeed a 67. With that color, it's a $500 coin. In 66, what's it worth? $100? Max, I'd say. So if the coin grades out less than 66, you're stuck overpaying for a pretty coin. I guess worse things could happen. When I say "grade out", that also refers to what your personal assessment of the coin is, not just what the services have to say. The services would have much more clout with their grade than mine though. image
You won't get a bag on that coin from the color, IMO.

  • Just so I can check myself on my Toning Homework that Mark gave me :-)...

The fact that the toning inside the 'O' in OF is different colored than the toning of the actual letter is a good thing, right? Same with the area round FIVE CENTS?

BTW: I am not a toning expert (as you can tell) but I saw it and thought 'Good Toning'.

I think it does look like a coin left in favorable circumstances but not liquid transfer toning. Does look pretty. I have a hard time with the grade 67, too. Could be, but you know what happens sometimes when you buy raw on ebay.

As a matter of first impression, I think it's real. I have a 38D which is golden toned with bluish centers; it looks a lot like this coin probably would if it had proper lighting. BTW, mine's a slabbed 6 & may actually be an upgrade candidate due to its enormous eye appeal (though it IS a technical 6).

I would not bid on this coin for reasons mentioned by Big D5, coupled with the fact that due to the lousy lighting, you can't see if there are tick marks in grade sensitive areas (which separates 5s, 6s and 7s of this series).

I like it and it doesn't look AT, but getting a 67 with a buffalo is tough but possible...
