A Tribute to Phil Messmore

Phil,

I remember when I registered the 1961 Nu-Card Scoops Mantle. You e-mailed me your excitement that I was building the set. It was genuine. Phil has the greatest 1961 Nu-Card Scoops set in existence with a 8.73 set rating.
In honor of Phil, I am sending in my raw 1961 Nu-Card Scoops Set to PSA to be graded and calling it "A Tribute to Phil Messmore". Also Phil, if you could send me a charity you believe in, I would like to make a contribution. If you need the money to help with medical costs I will send the money directly to you.
My thoughts and prayers.

That is a wonderful gesture. We need more people like you, not only in the hobby but in the world as well.

7 months later and im still waiting for the tribute.

As far as im concerned your non tribute was the most disgusted thing i have seen by a board member . I checked month after month and no tribute to our fallen board member and friend Phil

  • WOW! That's stunning. Almost surreal.

Edited to retract derogatory question following Jim's apology post.
  • hate to say this, but what happened to phil? if you don't mind me asking.

  • I have not done this yet...but I will.

Certainly wrong of me to not have done this when I said I would.

I do not know Jim, but from what I have read from him in the past I do not doubt his intentions or his sincerity. I believe that this is simply an oversight and that it will be rectified. All these harsh words for him are uncalled for.
    Looking for 77 cloth 9s and 10s.
    54 Red Hearts
    and now 64 Stand ups
  • I dont know Jim personally either. However I have been floating around these boards for quite a while and trust his integrity, commitment to our hobby, and respect his insight and knowledge on the full scope of vintage issues. I take him at his word.
Lets try to leave senseless member bashing out of the good things that come from this board.

Jim - Best of luck in your future set building and this tribute.

  • RayBShotz....well said. Nobody can possible be as bad as some of these guys make Davalillio out to be. I understand the fun poking that we sometimes do on this board but this guy seems genuine to me and a REAL collector.

Can't we keep it civil around here? In fact, post the charity so some of us other members can contribute. Then we'd be adding something positive for a change.

    Ray,

I agree with you - this one issue looks like a simple oversight and it seems like a lot of folks have taken some of Jim's comments personally and are looking for every reason to dislike a guy that was well revered on this board earlier this week.

Although there is always a time and place for member bashing...

Good call I for one have done some dealings with Jim and he is top notch. Everyone here at one time or another has forgot to do something. He admitted forgetting and said he would correct it. Thats more than most would do.

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. It was an oversight but I will submit my near-mint to mint set to psa before year-end with my next sumbission that will be entitled a tribute to Phil.

    Jim
  • Gee... Have I always done everything I said I would?? How many people have I told I would keep in touch, but didn't. How many times have I promised somethign, and then completely forgotten? Way too many, I tell you.

On this one, davalillo is being unfairly bashed. I am sure that he meant it when he said it, and now that he is reminded, he will come through.

And Davalillo, I have to say that your responses to the boards comments have been very restrained and dignified. I give you a great deal of credit for that. I have no grudge against you. I didn't appreciate that your first post on the SGC board was a PSA and PSA board bashing post rehasihng what you have already posted here. I also didn't appreciate feeling like I was being lectured to like a 12 year old in our personal dealings. I am sure you didn't mean it, but that is how it came across. I feel quite certain that if we were to meet in person, I would find you a great guy. Perhaps some day, we will.

    Rob,

Thanks. I think we would get along well. Apologize to have rubbed you wrong way in personal dealings. You have a simply awesome 1961 collection and you went way out of your way to put together a group of 1961s for me.

  • Rob,

I am sure that you told me at the national luncheon that you would sell me your PSA 9 61 Mantle for 1/2 SMR. I'm still waiting!! image

    Vic

Although I have never met Jim either,I have exchanged e-mails with him a few times and he seems to be a man of integrity as well as honest intentions.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

Thanks Frank and Vic for the support. Taking a closer look at my near-mint to mint set, I am going to be lucky if it grades out to a 7. Hmmm, must have bought it from Alan Rosen. Nevertheless, I will submit it and continue to upgrade it and make it a set that Phil would be proud of.

  • Has Rob ever sold anything at half of SMR? [THE ANSWER IS NO.]

But I have it in writing that he will give up his first born child for a 1961 #128 Rip Repulski in PSA 8.
