In a earlier thread this week, RKKay mentioned that he had purchased an Ott light and it had helped with photographing a beautiful pattern. I said, "Well, let's see it". Well, here she is!

Beautiful coin! Thanks for sharing the image. Looks more red than brown and I am sure there are subtle colors that are impossible to capture in any light.

She is the Washlady design. She also appeared on pattern dimes, quarters and dollars.

In all seriousness, to educate us that do not collect patterns, how rare is it? what is the history of it? and how much does such a coin go for?

I have visited RKKay's website, and it is terrific. It made me want to collect patterns--but I probably cannot afford them!

Washladies are very desireable and can be very expensive. In 1879, the same year George Morgan designed the Schoolgirl Dollar and put his famous Morgan Dollar obverse on several other denominations, William Barber designed the Washlady dime, quarter, half and dollar. Obviously, this design was never adopted for general circulation, but is very popular. This is Judd 1598, which is described by Judd as an R7 (4-12 struck) and Pollock as an R6 (13 to 30). According to uspatterns.com, between 12 and 15 are believed to exist. Six have been graded by PCGS and 5 by NGC. Washlady halves can go for up to high twenties as far as price is concerned. Hopefully this answers some of the question. If not, let me know. Rick

And, talk about a dealer that is "politically correct" - Rick Kay:

1. Enjoys 19th Century pattern coins in either PCGS or NGC holders;

2. Has fun collecting state quarters and other modern coins in addition to his beloved pattern coins without being "hung up" on which is "better".

In fact, Rick has recently invited me to showcase some modern coins (placed just a showcase away from these "ancient" patterns) at his Table at Long Beach (Table 651), which I have accepted to do. If you plan to attend the Long Beach show, drop on by. This might be the ONLY table at the Long Beach show where the "Washlady" peacefully coexists with Sacagawea
