Just going by SBA knowledge here I think they are both type 1...but don't put your money on my opinion. The mark is usually much clearer, again however this is based on the SBA.

Probably neither are type II, but it is confusing, I think that there's actually 3 types of MM for 81s. Type I, Type II and then the 1st pic of yours which I think is a type III. But send it in to PCGS to make sure.

  • Need a better shot of the one on the left,it maybe a type 2. A better pic would be helpful. Usually
the type 2 is flatened accrossed the top. I also agree that there were really three types of mm
    that year.

  • Better pic. Looks too rounded accrossed the top to be type2. They are tricky unless you see a lot of them.
Once you learn to look at the right spots they are not so difficult to id. itsnotjustme may see this thread
he is very good at id on this type.

  • They are both type one. The one on the left just has a better strike.

The type 2 has a different shape mint mark. Once you see one it's not that
difficult to pick out. The top os the S looks like it is flying away from the rest.

Neither are type 2, once you see the type 2, you never forget it. I know there is at least three types of the mm, possibly more though.

  • If you have the 2003 red book, there are good photos of the two types of mint marks on page 193. image
