"Washington Metal" Any help?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,198 ✭✭✭✭✭
I stumbled upon this interesting metal in a lot I purchased. I had never seen it before and included it in a grouping of coins to PCI. It returned today with NO HELP from PCI!
I mean, I knew it was a Washington Metal- that's what I wrote on the invoice. I was hoping PCI would be able to further identify it.
-Anyone here know what this is and from approximately what date it was minted?
Any info would be great! Thanks-

It's a restrike of a Washington Before Boston medal awarded to Washington by the Continental Congress after the British evacuated Boston via pressure from Washington. The originals are very rare and were struck by the French government shortly after, I believe, the Revolutionary War officially ended.

Thanks Tom. Do the restrikes have any value or is it pretty much just a pretty token?

I'm really not certain about the values of the restrikes. The originals are quite valuable since there were something on the order of 50 or so minted. The information I am typing out in this thread is really just what I remember from one of Bill Jones' excellent threads about early medals. You may want to shoot a PM to him and ask about a value and if my memory is serving me well in these details.

  • I have this same medal in my US Mint set titled "America's First Medals" from 1973

PS - I believe mine are pueter medals
