Has this ever happened to you?

You go out to your mail box at the end of the day and in with all the bills, credit card applications and mail order catalogs, you find a priority mail envelope from Heritage. Inside the envelope is the coin you ordered off their website 3 days earlier. This coin has been sitting out there by the street for hours without your knowing it. The package is sent without any return receipt requested or signature required but there is a delivery confirmation sticker on the outside.

My question is if someone takes the package out of my mail box, who is on the hook for the loss?image

  • No idea who is responsible but that has happened to me when dealing with Heritage.
  • Happens frequently with Heritage, and they would be the ones that are out the dough. Delivery confirmation does not guarantee receipt of the merchandise, and does not require a signature. The clerk scans the item as "delivered" and can put it next to the door for all to see.

Of course, my carrier has left Registered stuff next to my door as well, so you can't rely on the protection of those services either.

My initial feeling is that Heritage is self-insuring the item and that it is probably fairly inexpensive. They also have trust in you. The answer to your question is best done by Heritage and a toll free call there should answer it. If you are not satisfied, ask to speak with Greg Rohan or Paul Minshull.

I guess inexpensive is a relative term but the coin in question was almost $2000. I don't really have a problem with them shipping that way as long as they are on the hook for any loss.

I'd say that you are at the loss for not having a secure mailbox. After all, they delivered it. If someone takes it, then you were the victim of theft and it isn't their problem.

I know this pisses me off with Heritage. I'd like to spend a couple of dollars more and ahve them send the coins registered.

Theres a $13 charge on the invoice for shipping and insurance. I am sure they could send registered insured for less than $13. I sure would like to know who is legally liable if I never receive the package.image

I would add to the mix, that it is illegal to take something out of a mailbox.....so it becomes a federal crime.....I agree stop mailing to your mailbox you are setting up for a robbery! I know on our packages if the item is low value under $50 we usually will self insure use P1 with a delivery confirmation...if someone tells me that they never got it but the confirmation shows delivery I would assume that the buyer is responsible..... Someone posted a long time ago that they had an oversized package delivered with Delivery Confirmation, and that the package was scanned as "delivered" by the carrier. After several days, and some foul weather, he discovered the package was sitting in the bushes next to his door. The carrier will scan the piece as delivered whether they place the package in the box, or leaning against the door in plain view of anyone who passes by.

  • Heritage has a private insurer...you're covered...

Edited to include...never mind...yeah, you'd probably be hosed if somebody took it out of your mailbox...might be a hard sell to convince Heritage...

I had a Heritage package (2 proof Morgans, $4700 value) delivered Fed-Ex. Heritage stated on the bix signature required. Well, next day no box, a week later no box. Heritage calls Fed-ex and Fed-Ex says they left the box on the step. I go around and around with heritage about the coins. Heritage says Fed-ex delivered them so no ins. Basicly I was screwed, another month goes by and spring arrived and in the bushes (under the snow was a Fed-Ex box). The coins were fine, but I still think the whole thing and the attitude that the self insured Heritage stunk.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Yep, that's the way they do it.???
  • Unless you signed a signature release with fedex, they are responsible.

Still, it had to be a big relief to find it unless $4700 is what you spend for a good night out on the town.
  • madmarty,

those proof Morgans, were they nice and FROSTY.......I just had to.....imageimageisgustimage

  • I have received numerous packages from Heritage with coins valued up to $2500 with no incident. Personally, as long as it is insured, I like not having to be home to receive the package or make a trip to the post office.

Yes, and they were COOL coins, too....image

  • I have everything shipped to my work.

Much easier than having to run to the P.O in the A.M to sign for a package or worry about fedx leaving another package at the door..

  • Ok,
A dumb question here...If something is sent insured, is a signature supposed to be required? I live in a fairly rural area, and almost all of my packages are insured, but I rarely have to sign for any. Is this the routine for simple "insured" mail. Without a signature, what's to keep someone for saying the never received it?

  • boiler78,

something similar happened to me. I won an auction on eBay and the seller shipped the package insured which means it requires a signature upon delivery. Anyway, I was out of the State and somehow the dang package got delivered, I presume the postal carrier just left the thing at the front door. So I come back from my out-of-town trip only to find out that the thing has already been delivered. Needless to say I was out but the seller had his $$$ so he wasn't very helpful (sorry sob). We finally got the paperwork for the insurance claim to the postal service and I'm still waiting for a check.
  • Dwood,

If it is insured for over $50 it requires a signature. But I receive them all the time and have never signed for them.
  • Heritage insures all shipments, either through private insurance or in some cases, self-insurance. In the unlikely event that you don’t receive your merchandise, you will receive a complete reimbursement.

Please contact a customer sales representative at Heritage if you would prefer an alternative method of shipping.
