Who's the author on your Lincoln book? I have one at home that sounds like this (but I don't recall, I'd need to check) and it is very good. Packed with information, I have learned a great deal about these lowly coins from that book.

BTW: I'd like to get ahold of those other two books you mentioned, where did you order/buy them?
  • Got them off of J.T.Stanton's website. Here is a link.

David W. Lange is the author.

Lange is the author of the one I have, it's a faded purple (might be lilac) colored book. Excellent.
  • Got Early Half Dollar Die Varieties. Outstanding reference of Bust Halves. Would like to see an updated version (currently 1990), in particular concerning the rarity ratings.

The older Lange books have a lilac cover, the newer printings have a red cover. I prefer Sol Taylor's book to Lange's for history and information surrounding the series.

I like the Early Half Dollar Die Varities: 1794-1836, 3rd ed, Al Overton and (Hughes) I supplement/complement it with The Ultimate Guide To Attributing Bust Half Dollars, by Glenn Peterson (published in 2000) Peterson's book is an attribution guide only though.

Overton's Early half dollar die varieties is excellent for those who collect the halves. I just found my 1831 AU half I won is an R3 and not the common R1 die variety. The new 1990 one is the one you want, not the older 1970. Sometimes you can find it on Ebay for less. I buy lots of my books there.

I have Overton's book and believe it to be indispensible if you want to seriously explore this wonderful series. I also think it is highly valuable simply as a tool to learn about early US numismatics.

  • Just echoing what Tom and others have said about the Early Half book. Very thorough and informative. There is even a section on edge lettering errors. Thanks for providing the link. I'll have to order one of my own.

Overton book a must for serious early half collectors.
    Congratulations on the new aquisitions.
A quality numismatic library is an essential asset of a serious collector.
I love my books as much as my coins.
