A "No Band" Merc Dime.

Not here to knock the grading service for not giving this coin the FB designation but just want some opinions. The following dime is one I own. Lets just say its a D mint coin that is fairly hard to obtain but not really a Key or Semi Key date. The question is if you owned this coin would you be satisfied with it and just forget about looking at FB coins that come up for auction ? This one is a MS66 coin, white and really a pretty nice coin. Of course if a "Nicely Toned" coin was being offered this question would not pertain at all.

Thanks Much.

Send it to me and I'll let you know. image

Seriously, I believe it depends on your collecting tastes. The reverse looks great! Assuming the obverse is just as nice, since you said it was graded MS66, I'd be happy to own such a coin. In fact, I do own a few very nice non-FB Mercs.

  • Personally, I would be quite satisfied with having that lovely beauty as part of my set. image

Tell you what, Ken. Since it is a white example and I know how much you don't like white coins, why don't you send it to me for safe keeping? This way, it won't infect any of your colorful coins with it's whiteness. imageimage

  • Ken , I think I know which coin that is.If it is ,its the same grade I bought from our friend except mine is FB. The coin you have is a great looking coin. I guess the question really is,do you want to spent a premium to get it in FB? I dont know how much one costs in MS66, but I do know what it cost in FB.LOL.

I have a steady hand and a scalpel - send it to me and I'll help you out.

I try not to collect things that are graded so subjectively, but then fall back into the trap with "red" IHC's or "cameo" proofs....can't help, I'm afraid.

I would be satisfied with it: there is clear separation just about everywhere. Of course, in the registry game, the additional points for FB might make one "dissatisfied", or if one is going for a completely designated FB set, this would be a "set-breaker." But there is nothing unattractive about that reverse, and it certainly has a FB "look." I am imagining that the money required to "upgrade" it to FB could more efficiently be spent elsewhere, where it might really matter. Just my two cents.

  • Ken,

To me it would depend on the date/mm.
    As a extreme example:
If it was a '45-P, I would be satisfied. image
If it was a '45-D, I would not. image
I'd still be on the lookout for a sweetly toned one! image

    Ken,

That is a very well struck coin if the hair is as well struck on the obv. It would depend on the premium that FB would require for this date and mm. I have an 18-D 63FB that cost about 3 times what a 65 NB coin. I wish I had the 65 myself, especially if it was like your coin here!!!!!!

    Hey Thanks Guys and Gals.

I was positive that keeping this coin was a sane decision. Its a 34D and to upgrade to 66FB would cost a couple of bucks and I really did not want to go to a 65FB coin. As most have suggested the Money would be better spent on something that is really needed. Hmmm....wonder what that could be. image

I like the dime myself, I have a dime or two like that with out the FB on the holder. Like I tell everyone buy the coin NOT the holder.
