Weighted GPA vs. Final Set Rating

I know this has been discussed before, but I can't find the old thread. I just completed two sets, and the Weighted GPA and Final Set Rating are the same on one set, but not the other.

As i understand the calculation, shouldn't they be the same? I took the total of each card's weight in the set multiplied by the grade for each card, and divided that total by the total of all the weights in the set.

Also, my set ratings on the sets are higher than the highest ratings possible as shown on the Registry. I know that number changes when new cards are graded, and may not be adjusted continually, but is it ever changed by PSA?

  • If you complete a set, the GPA and set rating should be equal. Email BJ if they are not because something is wrong.

As far as the highest GPA goes, I posted a question about that several months ago regarding the '70 Topps baseball set. The thread received several posts with calculations of the current highest GPA and CU updated it that same day. I don't know if that was a coincidence or not, but it can't hurt to email your update, based on the Pop Report.

Not neccesarily. If there are variations of a card, one may be weighted higher and the GPA will not match with the set rating unless you have the highest weigted variations. See 1955 Topps All-American football for an example.

  • Good point Joe. My experience with variations is limited to the '69 Topps Baseball set, and PSA has listed both a Master and Basic set on the registry to account for the variations, since there are so many in this set. I guess there are sets that only have a few variations where a master set isn't warranted. The weighting of these variations could account for a difference in set rating.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

  • RGOLD,
I think your understanding and mine are the same for how this should be, but it doesn't always seem to work that way. I would have also thought the % complete would be the total "set points" you have divided by the total available. I was looking at 61 Topps FB today near the bottom of the listings. Three sets have 8.00 for GPA. One is 1.01%, one is 2.02% and one is 3.03% complete. The 1% is highest and the 3% is lowest. I have either made a poor assumption or there are more mistakes than I care to consider. I think this means you truly have to look out for yourself as you near the finish line or when it might matter.
